I'd work with the wood doors and window trim. Buy furniture oil and see if you can get the wood looking great. If you're still not happy, talk with a paint professional and see what options there are for stain tones with the finish that they have. When choosing a stain color, choose one that will enhance the slate flooring. I would not paint the doors. The doors are flat and I only like the look of painted doors with panels. I think if the rooms were painted white to off-white, the rooms will look much nicer with the wood trim. The pink + tan wall color brings out the pink tone of the wood more than necessary. I like how the wood trim repeats some of the colors in the slate.

If it were me, I would paint it all white or cream. I don't think changing the stain color will achieve the updated look you are after (sorry j222b!). A crisp semi-gloss would freshen everything up. Plus I would change out the door hardware to something more current.

Go for white! Our house was also built in the 80s. We painted all trim, doors and cupboards in "Artist Canvas" from Behr, over three years ago. It brightened up the entire house and we love it! I can post a few before/after pics if you're interested.

If you do paint the trim - invest in a few good brushes. Don't use the cheap brushes. They'll leave streaks and random bristles in your paint.

I'm with j222b. The wood trim adds character to the room. I agree it's the paint colors in the room. I'd find a "white" that looks fab with the trim.
