The youngster of a carpet beetle.

If you have only one, no problem. But if you have a lot, better start looking for the source (infested wools and more), then clean up thoroughly.

thank you for the id. she is a college student living in a rented house for this year. She found 3 of these bugs in her room. Not sure about the other girls in the other rooms. What should she be cleaning? (the floors are wood), and with what? Would a 'bomb' get rid of these insects? Should they notify the landlord to get an exterminator? Thanks for any advice.

These insects infest all kinds of natural fabric, leather, etc. Cleaning means vacuuming of EVERYTHING, and even inspecting pantry storage. Washing stored linens, and inspecting closets and drawers to see if clothes need to be relaundered. You can find pheromone traps that will help determine the size of the infestation, but chemical treatment is rarely called for other than in extreme situations.

Upholstery (if natural fabric), bedding, clothing, curtains, craft supplies, etc. are all possible locations for larvae infestations. Doing a good search for the primary source of the problem will be important, as Jean001 suggests.

Factually, all of the chemical treatments in the world won't do the trick if the washing and cleaning isn't done. They can get rid of the problem on their own.
