Spitfire?!? Somehow, any name with "spit" in it doesn't sound appetizing to me

Thanks for the feedback- I figured there'd be a trade off with taste/texture, wanted to make sure they weren't total rubbish.

I don't agree completely. I have grown two heatset varieties that do have good flavor. One is Heatwave II and the other is Solar Set. True, firm skin and firm flesh, but the tomato flavor is rather bold for production types. I'd grow them both again.

I think Sunmaster is terribly bland, and although it's not a true heatset variety, the supposedly heat tolerant Super Sioux was the least flavorful tomato in my garden this year.

I didn't care for Sunmaster. Heatwave II was okay. I'd grow that one again.

I don't know if Mountain Glory (Mountain Spring + TSWV-resistance) is considered a heatset variety, but it has been for me. I'd recommend Mountain Glory for a heatset trial as it loads up with tomatoes, tastes pretty good ... way better than Mountain Spring, IMO ... and didn't get Early Blight but just a bit of Septoria one out of two years. Didn't affect the fruit though.

basically my "garden" is a small brick courtyard, brick facing on both sides, hours of direct sun exposure. I call it the "brick oven" in the summer. The tomatillos love the blistering heat. The 'maters, not so much...

I figure this year I'm just going to go with mostly tomatillos and experiment with some heatset varieties for mid June to late August.

IF, we see a repeat of La Nina I need to cover my bases and have at least one tomato able to product some fruit in the heat. Last year was my worse year ever! Please tell me if you had any lucky with Solar Fire/Flare/Set?

PS, I'll take blah tomatoes over no tomatoes like last year. My standby Jet Star have lack luster last year with the La Nina heat. Supersonic was just a bit better. And all the others, Money Maker, Bloody Butcher, were swiped out from the heat. Only Sun Gold and Supersonic bounce back from the heat at least.

Living in Southern California, heat is always a concern. It's mid August and my Solar Fire has leads of beautiful bright orange tomatoes. While they look great they taste like cardboard. Virtually juiceless . I'm not sure what I'll do with them. Maybe a sauce with lots of herbs and garlic? Ideas anyone?
