07 Round up

Nope, no pics or detailed counts with weights, just some general observations of my toms this year, my thanks for all who contribute to this site and my small gesture along those lines.

My in ground garden space is limited and I supplement that with containers. My planting choices for next year are skewed to that restriction.

Early Girls produced well and were basically trouble free but lacked taste and will not be grown again except maybe in a container.

Jet Star was the earliest tom of the year and best tasting of the large producers. ItÂs why Early Girl gets the boot.

Burpie Original would be OK for containers since mine was very modest in size, did produce some nice fruits early but has been lacking since. If planted again, it will be in a pot rather than taking up valuable garden space.

Lemon Boys are one of our favorites. Ours were trouble free, reliable producers of 2"+, great tasting yellow fruits. Hands down were the best at producing in the heat though did have fairly significant cracking and green shoulders.

German Queen was the best tasting tom but is a very large plant and needs to be in ground IMO. This plant was plagued by constant BER and suffered significant blossom drop. Production was terrible but the pot was much too small. Because of its superior taste, it will be in ground for a second try next year.

Pink Beefsteak was a close second to the German Queen for taste and did much better in the same sized pot. It will get garden space next year.

Yellow Brandywines were nice, tasty fruits but very low production. Can be grown in a very large container but I doubt it will be in mine.

Husky Gold is very nice if you like small, pretty plants that produce thick skinned, tasteless fruits :-)

Things I learned,

Large plants in small containers make for lots of work and poor results.

Upside down tomatoes are not worth the effort. Your mileage may vary.

Squirrels, UUGGHH!!! A twenty dollar bobble head owl and some rubber snakes moved daily had dubious results. Poultry fabric cages were worth the trouble and expense but were not 100% effective, Human urine did not have a noticeable affect but a 22 and the neighbors cat deciding to hang out did. The buggers cost me weeks of production more than once.

Based on this years results and thanks to your suggestions, next year's plan is the following,

Jet Star

German Queen

Pink Beefsteak

Lemon Boy

Cherokee Purple

Aunt Gerties Gold

Black Cherry

I need another red and I'd like to find the red cherries we grew when I was a kid. They were about 1.5", prolific, very tasty and came up year after year.
