Very popular, many in use, generally rave reviews. Like Mike said - lots of discussions here and especially over on the Container Gardening forum here about them.

I have used EarthBoxes with tomatoes. The type of tomato and plant size will have a bearing on success. There is only around 9 gallons of potting mix. I prefer to plant 3 dwarf tomatoes (12" high), or 2 small determinate tomatoes (36" high), or 1 larger indeterminate tomato like Sweet 100 or SunGold. For best results follow all the instructions and also use their AWS (automatic watering system). Results for me have been less than in-ground planting, but still worthwhile to use.

Also search for "earthtainer" and see a DIY version that people make from plastic storage chests and other materials. They're only a little cheaper, but much bigger I believe.

I've been growing in a homemade version for two seasons now, with a fair amount of success. Its a 15 gallon rubbermade tub, 3" pvc pipe cut into 4" pieces, some screening, and an 1 1/2" pvc pipe for a fill tube. In my estimation, an quick and easy project, and gotta be way cheaper than a storebought version. Last year grew sweet100, this year yellow pear. Both produced nicely, though not as much as their in-ground counterparts. Just took mine apart for the season, should have taken pics of the massive amount of root growth. I also have a fig in a 20 gallon tub set up the same way that appears to be growing more vigorously than my traditionally potted figs.
