On saving seeds

Been saving some seeds lately. I found that the black plastic tray from micro-wave foods works quite well for drying. They don't stick very much.

Boy is it easy to mix seeds, so be care full. Make sure the seive is clean each time. Just looked down at my arm and a tomato seed was stuck by my elbow. Last night I found one with a tooth pick lodged in a tooth. Those little fellows sure like to scatter and mix.

Those work good but first you should attach a piece of masking or duct tape, then write on the variety name. I like coated paper plates, you can write the name directly on the plate with a sharpie before you spread out the seeds to dry.

I don't like non-coated paper plates, paper towels or anything else the seeds stick to eternally. Pain in the butt to get that paper off.

I ferment in Dixie cups then pour the seeds onto 1/4 sheet paper towels. I like Sparkle as they have tear perforations for 1/2 sheets so I only have to cut them once. I stack them in a box that just fits and then wait until winter when the gardening chores are over to scrape them off the paper and into small bags. I don't find them hard to remove. I have a really big stack of towels this year, paper plates, etc would be hard to store for me. I can write on the dixie cups with a Sharpie, but can just use ball point pen on the paper towels.

    Hi Hem,

I don't store my seeds on the plates, lol. After they dry the seeds are removed and into bulk 2 x 3 packets they go, then as needed I draw off enough seeds to do thirty 1 x 2 packets.

During seed saving season I do stack the empty plates and reuse them as needed--they're already labeled too so that's a plus ;-)

I don't know about that "stacking" of any thing. I can just see a seed sticking to the bottom of one plate, then falling off into another and mixing seed. That was kind of my reason for posting. To be care full. Those seeds are real good at getting mixed up.

    Good point!

I think that if anyone wants to store their seeds on the drying surface it would be reasonable to place them individually into baggies so that there is no mingling of loose seeds.

Try paper coffee filters, the seeds didn't stick at all for me. Then once they are dried, the filter can be folded into a nice "envelope" to store the seeds safely and w/o mixing until you are ready to final process.

I can second the use of coffee filters. There's a nice little video on youtube showing them being used.
