Are you downventing a range or cooktop? Cooktops are typically not a problem as long as there is no oven underneath it. You may need a slightly deeper counter to fit both. Island set up is much more flexible.

You are not able to downvent a range, except Dacor. Can't do it.
If the range is going into an island, you could fabricate a small riser behind the range that would have a mesh filter. Blower would need to be installed behind the range or in a remote location.

Also in an island set up, Jenn air and Kitchen Aid offer a downvent that allows for the blower motor to be reversed. this may work, depending on the depth of your island.
