Beautiful room! is there a piece of art for the room? if so, what colors does it have?

Thanks! We don't have any art yet. We want to start with the rug first to protect the floors. Pretty much a blank slate and all I've selected so far is the table, light fixture, and paint.

with my monitor, the paint color appears sage green and the chair upholstry appears linen. correct?

Hi sjs, what a beautiful room and it really is a blank canvas so hard to guide you reagrding rugs without knowing more specifics - favored colors, patterns, etc. There are so many out there. But I do have an idea for your windows, which are a bit tricky as there is limited room for window hardware above the arch. Here is an idea I think would compliment the style of the room without covering up the arch. Drapery panels hung from medallions. Simple and elegant.

The paint color is Sherwin Williams Mindful Grey, which does have a sage look to it. The chairs are linen.

I love the rug suggestions here but I've always been wary about getting a rug online becuase the colors on my monitor may not reflect the actual color. Does anyone else have this concern or am I just chicken?

I've ordered the matching runner to check the color match...much less cumbersome or expensive to ship back if it doesn't work.

With regard to purchasing a rug, how do you know if it is quality? I don't want to spend a huge amount of $$. Hoping to keep rug price under $800 as I already spent a hefty amount on the furniture (and house) but I don't want to buy something that won't hold up either.

an option is to find carpeting that you like and have it cut to size and bound. i have found good quality carpet is easier to clean than most area rugs. in my area, binding costs about 2.50 per running foot.

Stores like restoration hardware, pottery barn, and crate and barrel seem to discontinue offering some stuff each year. I think it's right after the winter holidays. They will offer heavy discounts. I can't remember the exact price, but we got an $800-$900 rug for $200-$300 from C&B. (It's pretty good quality for us - it's not hand knotted Tibetan wool, but it's held up well with our kids.) Just keep an eye out for the sales. Floor models will sell for much less too, but you have to be quick... Anyway, if what you like is on sale, you can save a little.

Awesome dining room! How about a dark mustard or tan color for the top part of the wall above the rail. Paint the bottom part of the wall in white. Add a nice rug with mustard, tan and brown in it. Add a grouping of pictures or a big picture to the wall of abstract art or a big flower. On the table, place a table runner, a vase of flowers or a grouping of candles and a small plant . I would add drapery to the window in a color to match the rug you choose. I would replace the small table with something a little longer to fill the space. The one you have is too small. On top of the sideboard add art pieces and candles or another plant. Place a few plants in the corners by the window also.

Unless you are looking for something that is basic - say navy and white, charcoal and white, chocolate brown - it's best to buy your rug in person when you can. Then you can assess both color and texture accurately. Look for something that's 100% wool and has a canvas type backing - NOT the plastic webby backing. The former can be shampooed and will hold up for many years. Mindful Gray in my experience is a fairly neutral gray - so you can add almost any accent color you wish in either a rug, drape or art. At one time, World Market had a cool ikat print curtain in charcoal, mustard and cream that might look good in your space. But really, you could mix in teal, plum, magenta, poppy, almost anything - depending on what colors you've used in adjacent spaces.

It appears you have front-facing windows both in your dining and living room. I'm of the (old) school that treatments need to match from one room to the next (when looking at them from outside). I'm not talking about matching fabrics, as your draperies will be lined, so a difference in pattern will make no difference. I'm talking about the type of treatment. Also, I would much rather see you keep the fabrics at your windows simple (fabric with minimal pattern) and place your "statement" on the floor and in your art. Choose your rug first, then your art, then your draperies. The exception is if you have a truly fabulous piece of art, around which you would want to fashion the room.

I agree with karen that the front windows should have the same treatment, not neccessarily the same fabric. But I think my design would work in both rooms, assuming they both have the same style windows.

Where did you purchase your table and chairs? I love them! Actually, I love what you have going so far. I think if you added some art, rug and drapery, you'd be good. I really like classic, uncluttered looks, though.

I have had good luck with rugs online, but I had some flexibility in my color tones. I think you do too! Pay attention to thickness details when looking at wool rugs or else you will be spending additional funds on a rug pad to get a thicker feel. For your style, I sense you want something more neutral... if you like the green tones, how about this one? Then pop the rust color for an accent in your art and table linens.
