Seed germination timing

I've been testing some tomato seed I saved...gotta see if I did it right :)

Most seeds germinated quickly: 5-7 days in a cool Michigan home. Now 3 weeks later another one comes up. Why would one in the middle of all the others take 3 times as long to sprout? Do you have similar results?

I was happy to find 90-100% germination in the small batches I tried. Thanks to all of you for your seed saving advice earlier. It worked!

Sometimes you'll have a stubborn seed or two in a lot that germinates later than the others, but that's normal. Glad your seed-saving was successful!

That even happens with commercial seed for me, long after I've transplanted the firstborns, and carried an ungerminated seed with them that shoots up right next to the transplant.

Could be that it was planted deeper than the others. Even if it did not start out that way it could have fallen into a hollow spot in the mix and had to grow father to reach the surface. Maybe it fell into a dry spot and it took a while for it to get wet enough to germinate. I've even noticed that some seeds move from where I first planted them to maybe 1/2 inch away. I'm thinking it has to do with how they end up in the mix after the final watering or misting.
