Thank you, Linda. Unfortunately, I don't have any idea of its true age. Can you explain how to discern a "flashed imitation"? A noticeable feature of the bowl is that no color appears on its bottom, which is why the color appears to be applied rather than integrated into the glass.

A Clear bottom means nothing......
What color is it? Is there a pettern pressed into the glass? What does that look like? Is there any thing...like letters or an insignia on the bottom? And....have you a picture or it?

The iridescent surface of carnival glass is actually due to a coating that is sprayed on, near the end of the glassmaking process. I watched this being done at Portland State University back in the 1970's. The spray contains iron chloride. To my knowledge the coating on carnival glass is not harmful, but I have no way of knowing that all carnival glass is created equal.

Carnival glass dates from the early part of this century....in more recent years it has been reproduced by Fenton and other glass houses....but that is not real carnival glass.
Carnival was a cheap pressed glass, with an irridescent sheen, given away as prizes at carnivals in the early part of this century. It was made in imitation of L. C. Tiffany's "favrille" glass.

As old as this thread is I thought I'd still add some points- If you consider uranium glass unsafe to use for food/drink (which most do) than you should think about getting a black light to check out your carnival glass. I recently found out my carnival set is uranium based. I would only use this for display purposes!

The problem is many people call many different things "Carnival glass". Real carnival glass did not contain radioactive material and is safe to use for food. HOWEVER many people call many other things carnival glass that may contain uranium or even have been painted or flashed and they are not safe for food.

This is the set I own, glows under a black light.

Well....it's "carnival glass" in that it's pressed and has irridescent coloring, but it's contemporary carnival glass, made in the 1970's. That punchbowl set is all over ebay in prices ranging from $40 up to about $150. I have no idea hbow it was made nor how safe it is to use....but I would assume it's fine being made so recently.
