Difference in 'Drop-In' and 'Slide-In' Ranges?

We're planning on replacing our freestanding gas range; however, I'm a bit confused on terms Drop-In and Slide-In. The freestanding does not have a lip that goes over the counter and the sides are painted. Both the drop-in and slide-in have lips that rest on the counter and the sides are not painted (nobody sees them). I'm having a tough time determining what the heck to replace it with. I love the "clean" look of the overhangs resting on the counter space of both slide/drop.

The only thing I can think of is "maybe" the slide-in requires some kind of mounting hardware and the drop-in doesn't.

mara, you do not remember correctly. Sorry.

Drop in ranges DO NOT sit on the floor. They rest on a toe-kick high pedestal.

Slide in ranges are designed to rest on the floor.

To confirm this for yourself, search on google for drop-in range and slide-in range. Search for images. There are LOTS of them. If you still disagree, please get google to change their pictures.

A drop-in rests on a cabinet or toekick box; a slide-in is placed directly on the floor.

Drop-ins are few and far between. Slide-ins are less deep than free-standing ranges. You need a piece of countertop behind the range to fill the gap - some manufacturer's provide it - other people have their countertops made that way. Also, a slide-in range will have all the controls on the front - many free-standing ranges have a backsplash with the controls on it although pro-style ranges don't.

The slide-in has a bottom drawer (warming drawer, oven, etc) and rests on the floor, the drop-in has no drawer and rests on a cabinet bottom.

You will also run across a few makers and sellers who continue to misidentify their products and aren't a bit concerned about creating confusion and have nil interest in "getting with the program".

OK, so far I'm looking at a slide-in based on what y'all are explaining. I'd rather the range sit on the floor with a clean overlap on the cabinets. Plus, she needs that drawer to store her junk in. TY all. XD

Our slide-in range does NOT sit on the floor. It sits in the cabinet, about 3 or 4 inches off the floor.

IIRC, drop-in ranges DO sit on the floor, and that they also have the sides which are not finished since they are not seen.

We just replaced our old range last year, and I was thinking it was a drop-in range when I went shopping. But it is a slide-in range and does not sit on the floor. If you're like us and have to order the range, it's very important to know what you need before you submit your order.

Uhhhggg... OK, well, I'm going shopping today. I'm going to measure WxDxH. If I have to order it, I will, but at least I need some hands on. As mara points out, the confusion on the term is frustrating.

Mara, can you share what range you picked last year? I haven't seen a slide-in that drops into a cabinet base. That seems contrary to the term "slide-in".

@impliedconsent: A simple range search on ajmadison.com will show you the differences between the three major types. We had a slide-in that we just replaced with a freestanding range. I think slide-ins look nice, but we didn't want the new range to stick out 2 inches from the counter like the old one. The free standing is perfectly flush with our granite and looks nice. Good luck!
