island backsplash

I've seen a lot of ranges coming standard with island backsplashes, and having an option 3 or 4 inch guard with a front facing vent ($250ish). I do not think that most people who buy a range, install it in an island, but instead against a wall. Wouldn't an island cap against say a tile backsplash discolor/dirty the tile from the heat/smoke from the burners or oven? If so, then the optional guards aren't really optional, and the extra cost should be a consideration. I guess I'm looking for some experienced feedback, as I've never had any experience with this, but need to consider this when shopping for a range.
