appliance shopping

We are remodeling our kitchen and went shopping this weekend. We went to 2 different Sears and were led in different directions. Salesman # 1 was promoting the Kenmore Elite line. Salesman # 2 promoted the Kitchen Aid and GE Profile lines, which are both currently offering a rebate. We will need a 36" gas cook top, preferrably with a sealed glass surface, a double electric wall oven (all seemed to also be convections), a french door refrigerator and a dishwasher. Since the cooktop will be on a peninsula, we are looking into venting. Does anyone know how the telescopic downdraft range hood works? Does anyone have any information on which brand is better? Thanks in advance for your advice!

had/have a ge profile arctica(discon't model) that will be returning to sears from whence it came

just couldn't get the concept that cold is below 40 degrees, even after a number of parts were replaced and hours on my part watching the servicemen

i'm replacing it with a KA; one of two brands that were recommended by the many servicemen who entered my abode: Whirlpool or KA-least problems in their opinions

i started this adventure at the beginning of Jan, after realizing around the holidays that the milk wasn't cold the way i like it and the butter soft upon removal from the fridge....monitored it daily in different areas of the fridge and taking the milk temp each am, first time opening of the fridge after the overnite. Milk actually hit highs in the low 50's on a number of occasions.

i really liked this fridge, its look, space, etc. and wanted it to work but after the latest part replaced and temps unchanged, i decided that i was done. And will not even consider another GE

As far as cooktop, have an electrolux icon 36" w/ceramic glass, 6 burners which i love, single electrolux oven which is a beauty but a little on the off scale as far as heating temps; but i just adjust it higher and that works ok.
do not have a telescoping downdraft

i would recommend doing some searches to get ideas on appliance reliability, but, be prepared for your heads to spin with all of the opinions, problems, etc.

I spent months, & i mean months researching fridges and in the end it was meaningless

good luck on your journey, it will be full of highs and lows but in the end a renovated/new kitchen is priceless!!!

We had all GE profile appliances in our last remodel. The only thing we "stepped up for" was the kitchenaid dishwasher which was a total LEMON! Repairman said I should have gone with GE it is what he has found to be most reliable.

The GE appliances we had were 5 burner gas cooktop. 30 inch double electric oven (top convection), side by side fridge and OTR microwave.

I was happy with all of them except the fridge. But they were 2001-2002 purchases and I don't know how things have changed since then. At that point the cooktop had different sized burners so you did have to move things around from boil burner to simmer burner but it was ok because it was a continuous grate. I found it very easy to clean -stainless and it looked basically new when we sold it last year. The ovens worked perfectly, they were not calibrated correctly originally but that was a simple change by the installer. The self clean worked very well also. The only thing DH didn't like is how long the fan ran after I turned the oven off - he was constantly propping the door -- it didn't bother me.

The OTR microwave - no issues at all.

As for the fridge -- it was pretty much a size issue. It was really too narrow for us. It also had the hydrator pan at the bottom that you could use to quick chill a bottle of wine but it didn't work very well - hard to close, easy to break - we even had it replaced and it still didn't close properly without force. There were also small silver colored plastic pieces on the top of the doors that broke off easily - didn't really show but was annoying.

Thank you both for the valuable information. I hate making decisions! I have an appointment tomorrow night with a friend of my brother's who owns an appliance store. Should be intersting to see his selections! Talk about head spinning!!
