Electolux Induction Slide-in? Comments?

We're going for induction. We'd like to go for the Electrolux slidein, which is a splurge for us, but all the appliance salespeople recommend the GE freestanding range, based on reliability and availability of parts.

The Frigidaire hybrid, at half the price of the Electrolux (yes I know they're the same company), is still under consideration too. Seems like the GE would be very functional, but now I'm a little hung up on the slide-in look.

I can get a better deal on the Samsung or Kenmore freestanding ranges, but have heard the Samsung burner layout is awkward.

Anyone have thoughts or recommendations? We have decided against a cooktop based on placement of the oven which would have to go under the cooktop.

Cohomom, you'll find several posts here about the Electrolux slide-in induction range -- search this forum using the search box at the bottom of the page (not the one at the top).

You'll find mixed opinions. Some of the earlier models had problems; these appear to have been fixed in ranges made after May. I was lucky; mine was built in June 2010, and seems fine (I believe this range came out in early 2010, before the other models you mention). I got this range after it became clear that there wasn't room in my little kitchen for an induction cooktop and separate wall oven. I'm very happy with induction, and with this range. I like the electronic controls on my Electrolux slide-in.

I'm not familiar with the GE freestanding model. Certainly its important to know who will service your appliance locally, if needed. You might call that local service company to ask if they are having problems getting parts for this range, for some reason.

There are some peculiarities about installing this range. Note that Electrolux assumes you have American framed cabinets, not the European-style frameless cabinets that I have; they don't say this, but they assume it. Be sure you have some room around the front (i.e., a frame), so your oven doors don't block cabinet doors on either side of the range. This range is also picky about the placement of the electrical outlet on the wall behind the range. Pay attention to these issues; don't try to just blow them off.

Then there is that lower oven. Is this a feature you're looking forward to using for something in particular? If you think of this as a warming drawer, which in a pinch might be used to cook a frozen pizza or bake potatoes or something, you'll be happier with it than if you planned to use it for a wide range of baking/cooking tasks. It works, but has some limitations...

Finally, there is the question of venting. Look for a good hood, noticing that this range's largest hob is at the front-right position. There are some posts about all these issues here.

Thanks so much. I was getting frustrated with that search box on the top!

I'm not hoping for much from that warming drawer. Really, I'd like the double oven with a smaller oven on top, but am willing to compromise.

I'll look into the venting issue. Our kitchen is small and we are using a microhood, but I hoped it would not be as demanding as a gas range. An appliance salesman suggested turning on the hood before starting to cook.

Luckily we do have framed cabinets, but I will be sure to pass this info on to the contractor!

I don't actually one one yet, but will be ordering the freestanding version on Wednesday. I just wanted to give you a heads up that Electrolux will be having one of their 10% off sales from the 16th through the 21st so if you're ready to buy now that would be a good time frame.

Oh I should also mention that I found the racks on the slide-in rather difficult to move around. I've only ever had fresstanding where the supports are built into the wall of the oven. With the slide-in there is a separate rack on the walls that the shelves attached to. My husband could do it with one hand on the first try, I on the other hand played with it for 15 minutes and it was still hit or miss whether or not I could actually get the things lined up correctly. Considering the majority of the time I forget to move the racks until after I have preheated the oven, I knew it would be a long time before I could actually move them wearing oven mitts.

So my suggestion would be go to a store that has electrolux and play with their slide-in racks (even if it's a electric or gas on the top the oven is still the same).

It is entirely possible I am just incompetent but check out it just in case.

I have an Electrolux slide-in that I'm very unhappy with. Since I've posted about it multiple times already, you can use the search function to find the details. I don't know how we can assume all the problems in this range were fixed after a certain date. I've yet to see a single review where anyone's using that lower oven successfully for baking.

Regarding the racks, I couldn't remove/replace one of my ''Easy-Glide'' racks either. During one of my numerous service visits for other issues, the tech checked the rack and realized one of its rails was bent. I called E'lux and they promptly sent me a new one. Problem solved.

    Thanks, all.

@Warmfridge: I have followed your travails... and took that info under advisement.

@cj: I haven't been able to find one in any store! But I'll keep looking. Thanks for the tip on the 10% off. It is the right time frame, if I'm feeling ready to take the plunge.

I have only had my electrolux induction slide-in for a couple of week but I love it.

Cohomom: None of our big box storea carry Electrolux in the stores but all 3 of the bigger independents around here have some kind of electrolux on the floor (although only 1 of those actually had an induction). Not sure what your choices are but I'd start calling the independent stores and see if they have anything on the floor to look at.

They may not have the induction top, but they might have the radiant top. This would give you a look at the proportions and the oven(s).

Weemeister: That's a good idea; I've see the radiant version at Sears (I'm in Seattle). Thanks!

Cohomom, you need to use the search box at the bottom of the page. For some reason the one at the top doesn't work. There was recently a post about the dangers of a hybrid range. I'll try to find it and post a link.
