Odd looking 'secrectary on CL?

Any idea what style and date this piece would be from? It looks more like a Colonial hutch to me, but the bottom does open like a desk. Could it be two unrelated pieces?

Value?

Here is a link that might be useful: Tall secretary

Please excuse my spelling in the title. I am having a migraine, so my fingers added an extra letter. There are also suppose to be quotes around the word "secretary", but once again...my fingers. :)

Looks cobbled together to me. I have a table very similar to the bottom half. No real cabinetmaker would put such a tall top on a hinged bottom, I think--if you open the lid, it'll hit the shelves.

It is interesting looking. However, unless it has been redone, the stain and wood seem to match each other. I've never seen anything like it, and for $50, I just might get it and then resell in a garage sale this weekend. Would be interesting to see what others have to say and what I could get for it. Wanted to check here and see if anyone has any knowledge.

I have emailed the owner, but have not received a reply.

I have a piece in DD's room that is very similar to the top part. It hangs on the wall, made of maple, folks bought it in early 1960's. Mine is longer has the same type of rail across front & has 3 shelves with division at each side so that there are little outer corner shelf area for more cup & saucers etc. even indent for the saucer to stand up & lean against the back & a little rail in the front of cup just like center area has. Folks liked it because we are in earthquake country & stuff stays in place more. I have it on wall over desk. I think if 1 on CL was on something else it would be a better match.(skinny table to hold heavy top) Folks have lot of other pieces. Bookcase with rail at top, desk that opens up with rail on top but it's high,(about 44 in. from floor to top) also only about 14 in. wide. Chest of drawers & dresser & headboards. They have it in 4 rooms. it was called Early American Solid Maple (store only sold maple)& it still looks like new. This maple looks darker than folks!(maybe dirty??) There was a knockoff that was cheaper made & I think that is 1 in pic. Also folks have hutch in dining room & table that seats 12 & chairs for 8. Have 4 bros. they wanted it to last! Anyway that top could have been in any of several rooms.

I looked at piece I have & it is much more a honey colored not so red. Maybe it is just the light where pics were taken. Not too bad a price unless as was said the lid of desk might hit the top & then you would have hard time selling it. I would expect the base to have solid sides maybe drawers or at least 1 drawer matching the top piece. I was with mom when she picked out the furniture. We went all over the place, i think Sears even had sets similar to mom's so it was quite popular in late 60's early 70's. I don't remember if they got it before or after 73' quake. Bought new house in 69' year all this was bought. Odd they don't show pic of the desk opened, maybe it is damaged or scribbled up -----

It's a piece that was fairly common in tyhe 60's...meant for a kids room as a study desk...before thed ays of computers.
I'll bet it might even be Ethan allen. They made all sorts of walls of stuff like that...it would be side by side with a chest of drawers ( as differing from a "chester draws") and a book case unit and maybe another small chest.
    I don't think it's a married piece...and I don't think it's very old...and I DO think it's well worth the $50 they are asking if you have a spot for it.
BUT....the lags appear to be an older style than the top...
    Hmmm?

Thanks for the information. I can see the piece as a kids desk. Makes more sense, now.

Still no response from owner. I guess they sold it. There is a phone number, but I prefer to email. My mantra..."If it's meant to be".

Heard back! The following is what the seller said. She also sent photos, but I cannot upload because my PhotoBucket bandwidth expired.

" Over all it's fine, it is not new or in new condition. I don't know what type of wood it is, and as for style it's probably early american? It stands 70" tall, is 28" wide and 19 1/2" deep."

Smacks of Ethan Ellen to me...or something of the same ilk.
Good buy for $50....even better for $45!

Yes, but I really don't have anyplace to put it. I was only going to buy for resale because I thought it might be an older piece.

The height is not nearly as tall or as it looks in the photo.

Since I do not live in the same town as the item (30 minutes away) it seems more trouble than it is worth.

    Thanks for the help!
