Well, I was thinking George Burns from your post heading!! Sounds like your hubby needs a smoking jacket in a fine tweed, or maybe a kilt,he sure had a brogue "To a Louse" is the interesting entry in my 1 poem book, about a louse on a fine lady's hat. Not sure I could read any of the poems he wrote that are in my 2 books, kind of downers. Might do search for some of his stuff that is lighter, I know I've liked things he wrote, probably in old Ideals! So you want a Scottish atmosphere & with lots of "toasts" need lots of laughter. Could you get a book on his life & DH & you give brief highlights of what he did ,he lead men into battle so was in the service,married? kids? Must be some interesting tidbits on him somewhere. Scottish music would be nice as people arrive. I'd turn it off as dinner starts as it can get a little much. Are you good at doing a jig?? Should be interesting & fun night.Jan

I think I'll go with a plaid table runner and solid table cloth. I have just a bit of plaid, enough to make a runner, but not much more than that.

Smoking jacket? I'd love to get my DH to wear a kilt, but he won't have anything to do with that.

There is a fairly proscribed way of doing a Burns Supper. The fact that there is an actual traditonal format is a big reason I want to do it. It is so different than most of my dinner parties where I pick everything! It starts with the "Selkirk Grace", piping in of the haggis, "Address to a Haggis", toasts to the ladies, men, and the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns, includes various poems and songs written by Burns and ends with his most famous "Auld Lang Syne". Near as I can make out, there are at least four toasts during the meal.

I am really looking forward to this.
