Updated Guest Bathroom

Our winter project is complete and guests coming this weekend.

This year we remodeled our Guest Bathroom. The original bathtub and wall tile and room configuration are the same but everything else changed - flooring, lighting, mirror/medicine cabinet, vanity, basin, faucet and hardware. I posted photos on the Decorating Forum a week ago but it was overcast on the day I originally took them so the colors were not accurate. New photos are better now.

Wow! The new bathroom looks great! I love the marble tile on the diagonal. I need to retile the floor of my guest bath and I'm about to remodel the master...I'm going to do diagonal marble tile floor in both after seeing your pics.

It's just beautiful! We have a bathroom that is similar in many ways, and are in the midst of planning a reno now. Ours is used daily by our two teenage kids, and the need for more storage is what is driving our vanity selection.

I noticed that you eliminated your former medicine cabinet, inset in the wall on the left of your sink. It gives a much cleaner line, and has me wondering if we could depend on the vanity for all storage needs and remove ours in the new design as well...

A job VERY well done! Could you share your paint color? It's gorgeous!

    Very nice!

Our guest bath is identical to yours without the window so we put our towel rack on that wall.

    Some questions ...

    1. why did you remove the by-pass?
    2. how is the curved curtain rod working out for you?
    3. is your vanity 30" or 35"?

We want to get rid of our shower curtain because it feels intrusive in such a small bathroom. Up until recently it has always been a patterned clear curtain with a white liner behind it.

I like the bar for storing the bath mat.

Thank you all for your encouraging feedback. We spent alot of time deciding just what to do in this bathroom. I really wanted a more spa like atmosphere for guests. There really is no way to remodel and alter the configuration although at one point removing the bathtub for a step-in shower was seriously considered. Feedback from posters here discouraged elimination of the bathtub, so it remains.

I'll try responding to each of your comments:

appletini - the approach to this bathroom is straight ahead as one walks the length of a hallway. We did not wish to see a "straight" line of grout so that prompted the decision to install on a diagonal. Our home has many angular walls (if you search the room photos linked at the bottom of the ones for the bathroom you will see) and so installing the tile compliments the already existing home layout. Like most rooms, this one is slightly out-of-square. A benefit of diagonal installation is that it better disguises such defect. I'm sure you will like the look as it makes individual tiles seem larger.

galleyette - actually we removed the builders low quality medicine cabinet and the glued-on mirror, then installed a 24" x 30" flush recessed medicine cabinet with the framed mirror door you see in the photo. It is MUCH larger and substantial. I like because it does not look like a medicine cabinet. It was necessary to reframe the wall in order for it to be installed. My DH is handy, fortunately.

We really pondered the vanity storage issue. There are some with a bank of small drawers but then the basin is off-center. As our kids are grown and guests are the users, in the end we went with a train rack for towel storage. We place clean towels out daily for visitors. However, we did hedge our bet with the purchase of one additional matching towel bar for a future owner to install. It is packaged and stored inside the vanity.

The paint color is C2, Monday Morning in an Eggshell finish. This is our first use of C2 and I like it. Their colors have a look of luminance. We first saw C2 paint in a new home tour last summer and decided to try it in this small space.

jodi_in_so_calif - For me,the by-pass door has long been a problem. It was difficult to reach the faucet to warm the water or to properly clean the tub as the toilet is so close. Then, bathing grandchildren was no easier. Now we have elderly relatives who need balance to enter/exit the tub and the bottom track is uncomfortable for seat or feet.

Haven't actually tried this curved rod yet but many hotels now have them. They give extra shoulder space AND, properly installed, bring the front/back curtain ends several inches inside of where a traditional straight rod goes so the curtain is more "water tight".

Our vanity is 30" but we re-set it aproximately 2" away from the wall in order to center with the new medicine cabinet. Filled the gap with a filler strip and gained a bit of counter space.

The towel bar in the shower is to recover the lost hanging space previously provided by the bar which was part of the by-pass door.

Hope I have been able to provide reasoning for our decisions but of course everyones usage needs are different. I enjoy the forums and try to offer some benefit back for all that I obtain.

Lovely. I especially like that beautiful floor tile, what is it?

Very nice! I love the floor, beautiful and so glad to see the example of the diagonally laid tile as I wrestle with the floor plan of my small 7x7 foot bath.

Can you tell me the brand of medicine cabinet? It looks great! Thanks,
    Ali

duchamp - Thank you. The tile is marble and my receipt calls it Siena Silver Light. I'm sure each retailer has their own name. We purchased from The Tile Shop which is a fairly large flooring firm. Hope this helps.

mabeldingeldine - If your floor space is 7' x 7' then 12" tile should fit nicely. Our space is 5' x 6' and the tile fit perfectly. The medicine cabinet is Broan/NuTone. It might be discontinued because the merchant from which we bought was closing it out and it was discounted. I just looked briefly on the websight and did not see our style. It was one of the more significant cost items for our update but smaller ones just did not look right in the space.

Beautiful job! It does look spa like now. Lucky guests and grandbabies!

I particularly love the floor. Does it feel like it would be slippery? I know this isn't your main bath, but would you install the same tiles in your master?

    Congratulations!

    semi
Guests coming later today and I, of course, hope they feel the same. Thank you.

As to the tile finish, we did question the polished surface as a safety issue. However, we have 12 x 12 gloss porcelain on the master bath floor without ever a mishap in 14 years. Many upper end hotels have marble. Our bath mats are non-slip and the tiled area in the guest bath is so small there shouldn't be a slipping issue (fingers crossed) with a mat in place. So, yes, I would consider marble for the master.

Your bathroom looks lovely, I especially like the C2 paint color, and the diagonal marble floor! Very nice!

We have the exact same bathroom, minus the window! I'm just about to tile the floor (myself) and now you've got me thinking about tile on the diagonal. Don't think I'll get it done before guests get here on the 1st, though!

techiestar - My DH was planning to install the tile himself. He is very handy and does most everything around here. But, when he installed the cement board it was apparent that the floor had a high point and he decided the skills of a pro were what the task needed. His comment after assisting the tile setter is that the smartest decision he made was NOT undertaking the tile install as a homeowner. It took the guy a long half day and cost $300. We gave him $50 more because we were so pleased with his work. Good luck with your bathroom.

    Hi
fnmroberts! What a lovely space! I am channeling very similar esthetic with my current tiny guest bath update...
Just curious about the black granite countertop....
is it okay to clean? how about water spots.
I have been tortured by a decision to put a black sink in our laundry room (matte finish with texture though) and it shows EVERYTHING...
thanks for all the detail! very helpful!

southerngalinnyc - Thank you. Our granite is polished and was sealed by the fabricator when it was installed. Sure, water spots show but they wipe right off. Periodic resealing with a stone sealer is recommended, for daily use about every 90 days. We installed black granite in our Powder Room several years ago and never an issue there either. I'm linking it below.

I can imagine a matte finish being a problem. Best of luck.
