right place--right time

Yesterday a friend asked me to come meet up with her and a couple other friends for some TS hopping. They live in another area so were hitting the stores over here. I joined them for a couple that had 30% and 20% off. I got so excited because I found a couple of painting books at one and about 8 at the next one--but my real find of the day was this leaf/acorn dish which is about 8 inches long. I should have found a white surface for a clearer picture I think--but you can probably see it well enough. Luvs

Sounds like you had a Grand Ole Time...and got some great buys.
You certainly were in the right place-right time!
That is a lovely dish. The colors in it are really lovely and unusual. It's almost like a 'graniteware' piece.
Good for you! I'll be looking forward to seeing how you use it.

Boy, Luvs. You're one lucky kiddo. That's a very attractive plate, even if you don't take into consideration your love for acorns.

What a pretty plate you found.
Ok, that settles it tho...your official nickname is SCRAT!

For those of you not familiar with the animated Ice Age movies (which are fun for adults too, nice escape from reality and lots of smiles)
Scrat is the character who is continually perusing the continent for his beloved, coveted acorn. He's just a 'fun' character to watch throughout the movies. He'll show up unexpectedly in the course of the short two hours, still stalking his nut! I LUV him!

LOL I can totally relate to that little guy now! My favorite part of his escapades is when he reaches the Pearly gates and sees the giant golden acorn waiting for him---then his friend revives him and pulls him back from the brink of death (and the golden acorn) and he is furious with him!

This find was so funny, it was just sitting on the bottom shelf amid all sorts of little figurines, candle holders, and other doo dads. Looked totally out of place with the rest, nothing else even resembling Fall, just waiting for me to notice it! LOL

    What a special find.

I love all the different textures...glazed, bisque exposure, solid colors, mingled colors.

I know you'll have fun with that piece.

What a great day you had, Luvs! Shopping with girlfriends and finding great bargains . . . ahhhh! Love the new dish. I know you'll come up with the perfect setting for it come Autumn . . . or even before!

That's a great dish, even tho I don't collect acorn things I can see how useful it will be for fall decor. I couldn't have passed it up either as I like pottery pieces with character. The thrifts I went to yesterday only had clothes on sale which I don't even look at. :-( I'd love to hear what you paid if you don't mind telling. I found most of the prices ridiculously high at the thrifts yesterday altho maybe it's because I'm more used to yard sale prices.

LG, it was marked $3.98 and it was 30% off everything in the store that day. I agree that some things are priced way too high, especially since they have all been "donated". I don't really look at the clothes either although I have friends who have bought name brands and even things with the tags still on. I just think it takes too much time digging through the racks and would rather hunt for dishes and knick knacks. ;o)

I'm going to have to get brave and start hitting the GS and YS I guess. I keep hearing about the wonderful prices, but I guess I just don't like having the owners right there while I'm going through their stuff or something! The few times I've tried it, I've felt uncomfortable--guess I need to do some self talk and realize I'm helping them out since they no longer want it, right? LOL

What I'd really like is one of those CTS stores nearby so I could find fantastic things at bargain basement prices like Kathleen and Jane do! ;o)

Luvs, what you said about GS-YS is exactly how I feel. I want to go but am just too shy to do that alone. I couldn't haggle price, LOL, and then if I didn't buy anything I'd worry they would think I didn't like their stuff. I need a buddy to go with!

And yes, that golden acorn in heaven scene with Scrat was the funniest thing. Think that was Ice Age II. He really steals the show popping up so unexpectedly in his acorn quest. Such fun movies.

Oh, I went to Dollar General yesterday. Nothing there except one Valentine plaque marked down to a dollar. Lot of empty shelves. I think I much prefer going to Dollar Tree anyway. Then I stopped by Big Lots, that also was pretty a waste of time. ?? I did pick up a few Easter things but was mostly disappointed at their stuff. Or lack of stuff I should say.

Karen, I just printed off a coupon for 20% off at Big Lots on Sunday evening. I'll have to try to remember to go after I take little GD home. Like you, I haven't been finding much there that I'm willing to pay their prices for lately. Seems like all the prices need to be about 20% lower all the time! All in all, I've only seen a few things for Easter and St. Pat's that were sorta cute. Nothing that's just a "gotta have that" item. Do we just already have too much or are we just becoming more selective? Luvs

I am hoping like mad that we are becoming more selective, tho its obvious we all have too much stuff. LOL.
I did get a few pretty things at Big Lots. A BIG egg (they had lavender. blue, and green. I got the lavender)
I got two boxes of egg ornaments that look sort of like mercury glass. And a pretty little silvery lavender bunny,
that also came in several colors and sizes. I'll try to take pix tomorrow.

Saw this photo of your "twin" and thought you'd enjoy it too.

Luvs, that dish is so pretty. Your twin is pretty cute too.LOL You know I would of loved to find the painting books too. So happy for your find.

Karen, you and your pictures crack me up. I can be all up tight about work and see one of your pictures and feel the tension release. Sounds like you found some sweet purple eggs and little lavender bunny. Not surprised you had to BUY THEM ALL. Will be loooking for your picture.

Luvs, that was a good price for a thrift, even at a yard sale I'd have paid that.

I strongly urge everyone who likes "stuff" to shop at yard sales as the prices can be really, really good there. It is more fun to go with someone, not sure if I'd go alone as often. DH and I always go together and also bring visiting relatives and guests if they are interested. It's a fun way to spend 2-3 hours on a Saturday morning. I often find people having a yard/garage sale, especially for the first time, are also nervous but will respond in a friendly way if you say good morning and make some pleasant comment (weather, how early it is, etc). Since I've held yard sales myself I know how much work it is to set things up nicely so if they have done that I compliment them. I also sometimes say, at some point, that DH and I go to a lot of YS's so have a lot of things. I also might say that I really shouldn't go to sales anymore but should have one of my own but find YS's fun. That way if I don't buy much they will hopefully understand. I also sometimes mention (with a laugh) our little rule of only buying what we can't live without. Then wish them good luck with their sale and on to the next. Of course there is sometimes the grouchy person who got up on the wrong side of the bed that morning and I just leave them alone! I must say I am less likely to buy from the grouch unless it's really something I can't live without. I rarely haggle anymore altho used to when we bot to resell but we bot a lot then. If things are priced too high I just walk away altho if it's something I really want I might ask if that's their best price or if they could go lower. Some people are not realistic in pricing so when everything is too high there is not much point in discussing it. If I am buying a lot of things I might round down and offer an even price. You know if it adds up to $22.50 I might just offer a $20 bill and ask if that's OK. Most people say sure as they are happy to have sold several things. If they hesitate I just pay the full price. The more I spend the better deal I often get. If you fill a box people are happier to give a bargain than if you are only buying one thing. Sometimes I've actually paid more than asking price when I know they have no clue about pricing especially older people who may not know the value of what they are selling. That can be as difficult as I don't want to offend but I just say it's worth $xxx to me and give that to them. I like the sales where people are selling their older parents or grandparents stuff and just want it gone. Then it's often fill a box and you can have if for $5. That was great when I bot glass for totems. However if they call it an "estate sale" I find prices are often high even on the junk.

I know for sure I have too much stuff and will be giving away or selling some things eventually. I think I am being more selective because I have little storage space remaining but also my tastes have changed over time. I will still buy things if I love them tho, regardless.
