Ok, Put Your Thinking Caps On!

I need inspiration ideas for a tablescape using my new brass deer. He's 19" tall, BTW.

{{gwi:1408791}}

I think the only plates I now own that MIGHT work with him is my green Oneida Solare set.

{{gwi:1409930}}

I can possibly use my gold rimmed white plates and look for new (used/ts) salad plates . . . but what?

I have several tapestry runners, but no tablecloths or placemats that might work.

I do have one painting from India, which hangs over the game table. Would you go that route: India/ Middle East or take it in another direction? I am totally open to suggestions!

I can't help you, but do you leave your tablescape/table setting out all the time for decoration?

I'd like to do something similar but I have three cats who are into everything! lol

I think a tapestry runner would be beautiful I'd love to see a picture of it.

Love the green plate, Lynn! Why don't you set it up and we'll give our thots?

I think the painting from India could work well as the deer has an Eastern look with the carved decorations.

Whenever I see your deer I can see a small wreath around his neck. Might be a way to add a particular color to the arrangement. Altho he's perfect without 'kitching' him up.

You mean for next Christmas?? Those pine cone plates you have might work...

Wow.. is he ever gorgeous ! He looks as though he is the king of the forest. I think I would take a different direction. I think I would let him take center-stage and not worry about "fussing" up the table too much. I think I would place a black or dark green runner down the length of the table. Then I would place small potted plants around both sides of him and down the table. I would use plenty of plants to give the feeling that he's laying on a forest floor. Then I would take some of the small brassy looking votive candle holders and place them in amongst the plants, so that when the candles were lit they would reflect beautifully off of him. I really like the Solare plates. They would fit right in with the "forest" theme. Are the rims and the design on them black or silver ? It's hard to tell in the pics. If they're black, I would use them with a black charger and gold or gold plated utensils and maybe black, gold or dark green stemware .. depending on what color runner I used..black and gold stemware would look really stunning together or black and green. This is just my own opinion .. I'm certainly not a decorator, but I don't think I'd want to do anything to take away from the deer.

I like your Oneida Solare ... does your tapestry have gold or black fringe on it? I'm seeing dark burgandy (is that in the plate) ... and golds and forest green. Ummmm....I am just loving your great buy! Maybe some gold earrings or jewelry of some kind for napkin rings??? Ahhh, you'll come up with something GREAT! Jeanne S.

I agree with Kathleen...those pinecone plates would look wonderful. Using brass or copper chargers.
Have him surrounded by pine boughs and pinecones and little white lights.
Those plates you show now are lovely too also using.. copper or brass chargers a solid accent plate and them on top. Gold tone Linens would look elegant.
He definitely has many possibilities by just switching your accent pieces.

When I first read your question, my first thought was your pinecone plates too. I do like this green plate too. He looks so regal, so I imagine your idea of an Eastern theme would work out really well too. Just play around and try different things--you always have such good taste and do really neat tablescapes. ;o)

Thanks for all your great ideas! I was laid low with yet another cold last week and ended up with a bad bronchitis, so I never got back and answered this.

Oakleyok, I have several tapestry runners, all have a burgundy background. I'll set something up and see how it works with the best of them.

Lucky, I'll try him with the painting and ask you all if it works. Thanks!

Kathleen: good idea for next Christmas Day dinner table, thanks! I was hoping to come up with an everyday table using him, too, though. Since he's a deer and not a reindeer, I think he should be fairly versatile . . . well, a little more versatile, anyway ;^D

Susan, I like your ideas! The scrolls and rims on the Solare dinnerware are a dark copper. I have silver, gold, red and some dark brown wood-looking chargers. I'll try the gold and see how they work with everything. I think the wood-look ones with plants might be another possibility, as well. I have red, clear, crystal and gold stemware. I'll try them and see, thanks! OMG, I've just remembered that I also have some clear stems with gold rims I can try! I'd forgotten all about them :~O

Jeanne, I had to go check, but I have two burgundy and gold tapestry runners, one with gold fringe and one with gold tassels. I also have a burgundy & gold tapestry-like tablecloth I can try. I'd forgotten all about that one! I just had a thought, wouldn't a sari look great as a tablecloth? I don't have one, but I should keep an eye out for one I could use. Maybe at Cost Plus or Pier One?

Jane, that sounds wonderful for a Christmas table! I like the idea of the white lights or tiny candles among greenery and of copper chargers. I don't have any, but will look for some.

Luvs, thank you! At the moment, he's looking great lying on our living room hearth. It's the part of our house we call "the International Zone" (LOL!). The game table is from Syria, the chairs are vintage New Mexican, one of the paintings is from India, the vase is African, the deer is from India, and my sweet statue on the game table is from China. He's 100 years old this year, BTW!
I just took this pic there. You can't see out the windows because it's a bit foggy and snowing again. Oakley, this one is headed your way!

Here's the painting from India. They used ground jewels for the paint. Why? I don't have a clue, but it's pretty. It was a gift to DH from an Indian physician friend of his who brought it back from a trip home to visit family a few years ago.

OK. I know you're trying to use what you already have, but when I saw him, I immediately thought of these plates.

Lynn, if you have ivory or white dishes, that's what I would use. Brass napkin rings would tie it all together~could probably be found at GW or any thrift store. I like the idea of a tapestry runner. ;o)

Oh, he looks beautiful on your hearth. My first thought was that he would look good with the pinecone plates, that would be a wintery look. The green plates are pretty, I think he'd look really nice with the white plates with gold that you mentioned. - Gail

lynn...I also agree...he is PERFECT on the hearth! Your room is so very, very lovely! TFS! Jeanne S.

OA, that Mikasa set would be perfect! Bad, bad friend to show me those ;^P I'm now lusting after them, but they aren't cheap! I'll have to keep an eye out for a VERY good sale, because (you're right) they're perfect for my house . . . and my deer, as well.

Patty, after first reading your suggestion this morning, I I did some searches on the Internet for napkin rings like that. Haven't found some I like yet, but will continue looking. Thanks for the suggestions.

Gail, I like the idea of using the pine cone plates, and think the white with gold trim might make very interesting table, too. Am hoping to hit Pier One and World Market this morning to see what they have to make my table.

Jeanne, thank you! That's nice to hear, as our living room is NOT what most non-New Mexicans expect to see. But many of us do tend to have very eclectic homes . . . it's just that the decorating magazines usually refuse to show those rooms (LOL)!

Lynn, I'm not one for giving the best ideas but I sure want to see what you come up with. I just think HE'S a handsome deer and looks great sitting on the hearth for now.

I really like your Oneida Solare dinnerware. Your pinecone plates could be a great Christmas tablescape with him. Just some tall trees or pine bows, holly and tall candles around him would be stunning during the winter months.

Your painting from India looks wonderful. I would love to see the ground jewels used for the paint close up if it's possible. Only when you feel well enough.

frankly sitting on the table like in the first pic shows he is the lord of his domain....looks like crown on his antlers....I like the Solare plates you show also....reflects the cool/cold of the weather outside. Plates match the material you have under him now. Maybe give him a cool but royal look on a 'forest floor' base. You know the way a place looks when they lay at night and the next day it is flattened and looks like a nest. Also maybe a thin brass candlestick or three. Two in back and a short one in front of him...for a voltive type candle. Candles the color of the plate....a foresty teal green.

Punk, you always have good ideas and I always enjoy hearing them! Your Christmas table idea sounds lovely and I'm definitely going to try it next December. I do have some smaller trees that would work well on the table with him. Thanks! Here's a close-up of the ground jewels painting. It's done on silk, BTW. I don't know much more about the process or why they use ground jewels to paint with. It sounds like waste of good jewels to me. My guess is that artists use the chips left behind when various jewels are cut, but that's only a guess. I've just tried googling "ground jewels+paint" and didn't find anything.

Hi Twomonths, and welcome to our forum! I see from your GW page that you're originally a Texas gal now living with your family in SoCal. Your ideas are great. I actually have a box of slender brass candlesticks in varying heights somewhere around here. I hadn't even thought of them until you mentioned this . . . thank you! Hope you post here more often now :~)

Hey Two, I'm glad to see you over here. Its a great Forum!
Other than being full of Enablers who make you buy things you never knew you 'needed' till you saw a picture of. LOL.

Lynn, Wow, thanks for sharing a larger photo. That is a nice picture and it's even better than I would of thought. Thanks, for taking the time to enlarge and post.

Welcome Two, I think you have a great way of stating it. Lord of his domain....looks like a crown on his antlers.... oh boy if that isn't the truth.
