Oscar Night tablesetting ....

Well, the only way you call tell its a tablesetting for Oscar night is for me to say it is.

DH is a big movie and theatre buff - he used to act and direct though college. When we were engaged, he was completing a small soap pilot so I got him the comedy/tragedy masks as a gift. Thats probably the only thing related to movies on this table anyways. :) Do you guys have any ideas of how to display masks on a table setting? I struggled with it and finally just plopped them down. Any other suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

The gold candle holders are from Michaels after Xmas sale. And the napkin rings are from Kohls. The star candles are from Pier-1 after Xmas sale. The beaded garland with the candles is actually a necklace I made a long time ago. The black plate is just sitting on candle holder. :)

According to DH, I need little award things for the next year and somehow have popcorn containers on the table.

    Great! Love those masks!
You are really getting into this MO!

    Mo,
I think the napkin rings look a little like film reels.

I saw small oscar-like awards at Walgreens. They were $10. Too much to get more than one. So I am going to pop over tomorrow to see if they are on sale.

The masks are cool. I think they look fine just placed on the black fabric.

This is really cool. Check out the little Oscars and stuff here:

They are pricey, but could be bought up over the next year.

    Thanks Kathleen. :)

Oooh, I will have to go into Walgreens tomm and check for them. $10 is a little much for more than one of those.

Thanks for the link, Printersdevil. I love those personalized awards they have. I have to have the salt & pepper shakers they are selling!!

It's very sophisticated, and even if doesn't scream "Oscars", the masks definitely give it a dramatic theme, which was very fitting. Great job! - Gail

Mo, how nice you thought to do a tablescape for something your DH is interested in. Did he appreciate it? You did a wonderful job, black and white always spells "drama" to me and your masks and star candles add the extra touches. That is the good thing about tablescaping for the holidays/events, you can always start with what you have on hand and then pick things up over the year when they are on sale for the next time you set the same themed table.

    Cute idea, Mo!

I love it! Your masks are just the perfect touch for oscar night, and I always love black and white tables. I agree with OA that your napkin rings sorta look like film reels too. You really are getting into this, so glad you are having fun with it Mo. Luvs

DD, Surprising, DH did like it. I set it up when he was out of town so I got to play with the dishes and fabric. :) He wants me to do a golf themed table setting sometime. Now, I am on the look out for some nice golf things. I have a few things for a centerpiece at home and even a fabric that I got a long time ago but nothing in terms of dishes.

Thanks Lynn and Luvs. Luvs, it is fun, isnt it? I am a little stressed at work because of impending layoffs, so I have been getting more things done at home - the whole house was spotless over the weekend, I played with dishes, did some sewing, even managed to get some gardening done. :)

    MO,
I saw some cute things done with squares of artificial turf for an outdoor party. Maybe you could use some for the golf theme. Cut a strip into a putting green shape and put a couple of pools of sand around it for sand traps and a flag that says "19" for the 19th hole. Put a tiny slit in some toy golf balls and insert place cards. What could you do with those tiny pencils they keep score with and those two-pronged gadgets they use to clean the mud from between their cleats?? Hmmm. I don't play golf, so my imagination is limited.
Do keep us posted. Of course, we'll want pictures.
That's neat that your husband is requesting themes! How much fun!

What an elegant, dramatic table, Mo! I love EVERYTHING.
Those masks are perfect right where they are. I have some black and white stuff that I have been gathering for a B/W tablescape and after seeing your table I may have to go get some gold bling! The gold really makes it POP. Great job.
Where did you find those lovely ruffled salad plates? I need some in black.
Can't wait to see how you top this one.

    OA,
Firstly, no luck at Walgreens with the award for me. There was absolutely nothing there last night. :(

About the golf table, those are great ideas. I was thinking of the golf ball place card holders myself. I was thinking of cutting out felt into putting green weird curvy shapes but I like your idea of the turf better. I was thinking last night that I could paint some golf themed simple designs on the back of plain glass plates. The pencils are easy to work in - maybe even those score cards somehow. I dont play golf either - I tried one season and didnt feel it was for me. Thanks for all the great ideas!!! I might come back for more suggestions.

Thanks Betty. I got those salad plates at the Japanese dollar store - Daiso. I dont think I have seen them in black there. Its actually a chain store but is only on the west coast mostly.

    Mo,
I'm not having any luck at Walgreens either. There are at least a couple of dozen statues left, but they haven't gone on sale. One of the clerks told me that they won't go on sale because they aren't seasonal since they have BEST WIFE, BEST FATHER, BEST SISTER, etc on them (which I had planned to remove).
Well, I'm not going to give in. I'll just visit them from time-to-time until they're gone or they're cheaper.

Hey, I forgot about golf tees! Maybe you can make some sort of napkin rings out of them.

I wish my hubby would make a tablescape request. I'd be jumping all over it.

The Dollar Tree here has a wire basket that looks like the range ball buckets for the golf driving range. One year my DD was making a golf basket for her Dad for Christmas and couldn't figure out how to present it and I found the wire basket for a dollar. I have used them often since then for gifts and swaps. My husband is an avid golfer, too. In fact he is 13 days away from his annual golf week in Houston. He and a group of players from the states and about 15 from England meet this same week every year and play golf all week at a variety of courses. He is about to start counting down the minutes!

What a great idea!! Using the black/white really does the trick since it's supposed to be such a fancy-smancy occasion. The masks add the 'real deal' to the table. You must really be into the oscars! Bet it was a fun night. ;o)

OA, thats a bummer about the statues! I wonder if there is any way to make the statues for cheaper. :) Or buy cheapo ones and spray paint them. Golf tees are a great idea too - actually I am always finding tees in DH's jeans and jackets that I have them in a little copper pot on the table so I already have a bunch.

Printersdevil - thanks for the tip. I will have to look for those when I go to the dollar store next time. Wow, your DH sounds like a hard core golfer! The golf week sounds like a lot of fun.

Thanks, Patty cakes. We watched the whole show and then the specials and the oprah show on the oscars. :) We are from India so we liked the Indian song performance and we were rooting for some of the music director who won. And hey, there is Hugh Jackman, whats not to like!! :)

Mo, we used to live on a golf course, so I thought I should learn to play. I actually took a class at the Park & recreation board only to discover that I might hit the ball one time and miss it completely the next! Found it very frustrating and decided I wasn't cut out to play golf. However, I did enjoy riding around in the golf cart with DH--I watched for bunnies and picked up pine cones along the way and just enjoyed the scenery and the beautiful day! LOL

Hope you have lots of fun creating your golf table for your DH. I can even picture two golf clubs criss crossed on the table as part of the centerpiece. Lots of possibilities. Have fun.

    Mo,
I got these. $16 (which includes shipping) for a set of 12. May be more than you'll ever want, but you can't beat the price.

Here is a link that might be useful: trophies on Ebay

Thanks for the heads-up, OA. They look like the ones Printersdevil has linked to also. They actually look pretty good for the price.

    Mo,
You're right. They are the same, but the shipping was much cheaper on eBay. (At least it was much cheaper for me. I'm in California.)
Oh, and I found some salt and pepper shakers on eBay too. Eight dollars including shipping.
Now you watch. I've got a bunch of stuff that can't be used any other time but Oscar Night, and for reasons beyond my control, I won't be able to use them next year. Isn't that just the way it goes!
