Need recommendations on range

I want to replace a free standing most hated Jenn-Air gas range, I was set to buy a Kenmore Elite slide in but ran into many unresolveable questions like what do i fill the gap at the back of the range with, what does the backsplash look like etc..Sears was so clueless they lost a sale...

I really don't want to spend over $2200 free standing is ok, but I don't want any controls on the back of the range, the circuitry on my 7 year old Jenn-Air frys itself everytime I use a pot on high on a rear burner, so basically after 10 repairs I have a 2 burner stove...

I want SS, something with at least one good high powered burner, I like the kenmore bridge burner, but I don't know what other ranges have those.

Thanks in advance, Lynne

I've been looking for a new range. I found a GE free-standing electric range JBP84SKSS in SS. It has a bridge burner and a 3000W 9"-12" burner along with a 6" and 2 7" burners. Also has a warming zone on top and a warming drawer. The convection oven is 5.3 cf. $1249.

I'm sure this is available as a slide-in but it was out of my price range at $2500.

You can order from HD, Lowes, Best Buy and Sears. I'm on my way out now to Sears friends and family sale. Hoping to get another 10% off. Wish me luck!

I'm drooling over the Bosch slide ins right now. I have not seen the freestanding but from online pics it looks like the controls are up front.

    Good luck!

Lynne, I'm back from the Sears sale that you posted about! Thank you! You saved me $2600! Well since I saved so much I went ahead and ordered the Kenmore Elite slide-in with the bridge and smooth touch (easy clean)controls! It comes in 2 weeks I'll let you know when I get the backsplash issue figured out. Thanks again!

My husband knew I had my heart set on the kenmore elite slide in, so we went to Sears again tonight, the salesperson was so much better than the one we had today, she answered all my questions and told us exactly what to do to get the range to fit. DH is calling our granite guy tomorrow to come and extend the 6" backsplash across the area the range will go in. I'm really happy the range has good reviews and we saved a ton on it, the discount was 28% (20% plus another 10%)

Lynne, I also have to thank you for posting about the Sears sale.

I went last night and bought a Kenmore Elite freestanding gas range and vent hood for 28% off, plus a Kenmore countertop microwave for 10% off.

I originally had my heart set on a Bluestar, but when spring sprang and I thought about all of the home improvement projects that were going to require $$, I decided to go for a less expensive range.

Hey ya'll, didn't you get a rebate with your receipt for another 10% off? I did. It is for buying a built-in. See if you can find it on Sears website. After I get my rebate back I will have gotten the range for 35% off! Not to brag but I think this is one of my best bargains ever!

Nope no rebate on my receipt - would it be possible for you to scan the rebate portion of your receipt and maybe upload it to photobucket or something? On the sears site it says '10% off select built in cooking' but its not a rebate, and I don't see it listed in their rebate section - any info you can provide would sure be appreciated

Can someone please tell me if the Kenmore Elite has the fan that sticks out into the oven. I need to replace my new Bosch and the one thing I liked was there was no fan taking up space.

I haven't been to Sears to look and the pictures on the website aren't very good.

Any thoughts on this range would be appreciated.

Lynne-just now checking back in. When I get back to work Monday I can scan the form and e-mail it to you. I haven't learned how to upload and post yet. angier_miles@bellsouth.net

I am also getting a rebate back on my $60 delivery fee.

Tracey I'm not positive but i don't think the fan sticks out. I can let you know for sure in a couple of weeks. My range, microwave/hood and DW gets delivered 4/7. The day after I leave for Spring Break with the kids. So my DH is going to be cooking on it for a whole week before I even get to see it!!! :o( I am so worried he is going to try and install/hang the microwave by himself. Or do something to damage the cooktop. He wouldn't read directions to save his life! I hope he uses the DW and I don't come home to a weeks worth of dirty dishes LOL.

Rebate on the delivery! Wow I need to call my salesman about that one, pretty soon I will be getting that range for free lol. Tracey, the fan in the back wall of the oven protrudes maybe 1/2 -5/8 of an inch. I love the range, it's in and installed, in fact here's a picture.

Thanks so much for the information. I guess I'll call Bosch and tell them to pick up their range.

Last night on the Sears website it was on sale for $1784 plus another 10% off but this morning it's not. I can't get to Sears until at least tomorrow. I may have to wait for another sale.

Lynneblack, Have you baked yet? Can you tell me how the oven is. I have to go with all electric but would love duel fuel.

I've only used the oven for a roast, and the broiler for some garlic bread - I am dying to try some 'real baking' and will let you know how it goes once I do. Sears sales are really funny, prices seem to change by the day, but they do have a 30 day price protection policy so you can get an adjustment if it goes on sale. Also, most of the time you can get 10% off or free interest if you open a sears account, the guy who delivered my range said that whenever he buys something like an appliance he closes his sears acct and opens a new one to get an additional 10% off.

I've got another question. Do you have 3 racks or 2 full and 1 half racks? If you have 2 1/2 what is it like? What can you fit on a half rack?

I am going to look at it tomorrow. If I like it I can get it for a great price.

I hope you all don't mind me jumping in here. I just have to ask Lynneblack... how do you like the wood floor in the kitchen? Does it get full of dents and knicks from dropping things? I'm the crumsy sort. Also, please tell me what you use to clean it without making it slippery.
Thanks very much, and again, everyone please excuse me.

I love the wood floor, it's full thickness prefinished birch, and it's never really slippery unless I get super sloppy and spill oil on it. I have hardwood all over the house except in the bedrooms, I use a hoover floormate spin scrub, it washes and dries the floors without streaks, I love it. The floor does have some dings and scratches, but it still looks ok, I had tile in my last house and it looked worse after about 4 years from me dropping stuff on it than the wood does after 7 years, and I am really super clumsy.

I'm sorry Tracey I missed your question about oven racks - it has 2 full racks and one half rack, the half rack is usable as a full flat rack unless you remove the insert and convert it into a half rack- i hope that makes sense

Thanks Lynne. I went and looked at it this morning and I'm taking it. It was such a great deal I couldn't pass it up. It had been ordered for a customer who decided not to take it. I got it for $1028(reg price was $2099) and a rebate on delivery. It comes with the full warranty so I'm covered. We'll see how this works out.

    Tracey

Wow! that is a good deal congratulations

    traceys

Why are you replacing your Bosch range? Just wondering why it needs to be returned. Thanks

Did either of you buy the Protection Plan? The salesman talked me into it. He said it would replace the top if it cracked.

Lynne- Tracy almost did get hers free. that's a great price!
Please I want to hear more stories of cooking, roasting, baking and broiling! Mine is still 2 weeks away and I can't wait.

I'm real happy with it, I love the bridge burner, it's great for a big frying pan, tonight I cooked breaded pork chops and using the center and rear burner I didn't have to move the chops around in the pan to brown them evenly, that was a nice surprise. Oh yah, and water boils really fast...I still need to bake something though, all I have used the oven for is roasting so far. My husband likes the range alot, his job is after dinner clean up and he said that it took him about 20 seconds to clean up the range compared to the full 5 minutes the old black top Jenn-Air took.

Angier - I bought the protection plan, I hated to spend the $ on it, but after my 7 year old ordeal with countless repairs on my old POS Jenn-Air, I just felt I would sleep better not having to worry about this one. These are not our mom's mostly mechanical ranges, they are electronic monsters just waiting to break when you are cooking Thanksgiving dinner.

I purchased the protection plan too. I had a horrible Maytag range and the repairs were ridiculous. Getting someone to come here was a pain too.

    Lynne,

It's September now. Do you still like your Kenmore Elite slide-in gas range? We are debating between that model (which we can't touch and feel as no stores anywhere close to us carry it in the store) or the KitchenAid Architect II series - that seems to have a lot of complaints. I like the look of the KA but I have this feeling that it would be the wrong choice...It's pretty, but if it stinks, I don't want it.

Any complaints to share? Has it worked as it should? Happy with how it cooks?

    Thanks,
    Dawn

I forgot to ask you too...Is it a flat surface under the burners/grates? Like is there no well to catch spills or overflows? And so when something spills, would it just run right off of the stove and between the cabinets and stove? I'm very curious about this as it might make the difference to me between getting the model with the bridge or without (which appears to have more of a well in the pictures).

    Thanks,
    Dawn

Oh yeah, and anyone else who has the Kenmore Elite slide-in gas range, feel free to chime in too. I have to clarify...It looks like Lynne's is the slightly more expensive model with bridge burner (and a glass top?). Looks like the next step down doesn't have a glass top (therefore it has a well).

Any thoughts on the glass top issue?
Sorry to keep posting...This decision is driving me crazy and I keep thinking of more questions. I just hope someone has some answers!

Hi Dawn, I don't have the gas range. I have the all electric slide in. I can't help you with the cooktop but the oven bakes and roasts perfectly. I use convection quite a bit.

    Tracey

Thanks Tracey. So you've had no problems needing repair, quirky things breaking or acting funny, major complaints? And if you have the electric, is it a glass top? If so, does it have a lip to catch spills or does it run flush to your countertops. I'm just curious if this would truly be an issue (spills running between counters and range) or if I'm making a mountain out of a molehill (not sure if I've ever had a giant spill on the stove before).

    Thanks,
    Dawn

I hesitate to say this, but I haven't had any problems at all.

I do have the black glass cooktop. It doesn't have a lip around the sides and back but there is one in the front. It concerned me in the beginning but it hasn't been an issue. It does come with a black piece of metal for the back, if the area wasn't made for a slide in or drop in range. There is also some type of spongy material that runs around the underside of the cooktop and rests on the counters to seal it.

I had a Bosch before this for about 5 months(it was a lemon and I finally got rid of it). Anyway, I find the electric burners on this range amazing, better than the Bosch. I have the one without knobs and it's so easy to work with.

I love this range and hope it lasts a long time.

    Hi again Lynne or Tracey,

So after our chat I got the same range as you Lynne (gas on glass). Bought it in October but didn't move back into the kitchen until December. We've had one issue that keeps bugging me and I wanted to see if you have had the same. In the first week or two of using it, we busted out the griddle and made pancakes on the bridge burner. During that cooking, we started to smell a nasty, plastic burning type smell coming from somewhere on the stovetop. I mean it really filled up the neighboring rooms with a very toxic smelling smell. After it cooled, we took everything apart and the smell seemed like it was coming out of one of the gas holes.

So we called for repair. Of course, the smell wouldn't duplicate itself for the repair man until he left the house thinking I was some nutty housewife. I ended up having to run out after him to get him to come back in once the smell kicked in. He dismissed me very quickly (like he was done with me) saying he thought it was the griddle. I don't buy it.

This smell has continued on and off even when we're not using the griddle - especially if we have the oven on.

My question is - Is this normal, burning off of some nasty coating (ick)? Or should I push the issue as a defect of some sort? This kitchen actually got renovated as a result of a gas grill fire right outside the kitchen so I'm extra paranoid about the possibility of fire (like is there a burning wire or something inside the panel).

Incidentally, we also had the oven handle start to loosen up after about a month and, unfortunately, you can't get to the screw because of the design so I had to have a service call to have a screw tightened (dumb...well, smart for Sears, I suppose).

And for other folks looking at this range, we have been happy other than these 2 service calls and my lingering concern about the safety of this burning smell! Oh, and I do think the space is a little tight between the high grates and my microwave hood. I didn't even think about that but it's a little tight in there and the underside of the micro hood really seems to heat up quickly when the stove is going. Something to consider in making your choice of products.

Look forward to hearing if anyone else has the smell!
    Thanks,
    Dawn
