Vanities

We need to reno three bathrooms (if we can, all three this year!). We'll need vanities for all three. Any good suggestions for places to look in the NY area (we're in southern NY state with access to northern NJ or NYC, too).

We like contemporary, clean lines, probably slab doors/drawers. We loved some of the pics on giacomo's site and links recently. We're hoping to keep costs down if we can (with three to do, we have to!), but want quality and do like nice things.... We are spoiled after doing the kitchen with Blum glides and hinges, soft close, Blumotion, etc., so will likely want those things in the bathrooms as well.

Our saving grace is that the bathrooms are all on the small side, so the vanities really can't be much more than 30", but we need to maximize storage as much as possible.

TIA!

I've been looking for a clean-line, contemporary, small cabinet too. I found one at our HomeDepot Expo, Strasser is the manufacturer. Their website lists dealers. The one I'm considering has 3 small drawers down one side, a small cabinet with a drawer under that. It seemed like a quality piece. They have a slab door option that makes it look a bit contemporary.

Check out Restoration Hardware. They have some on sale, that come WITH stone counters and sinks!

Wish I'd seen this option before we ordered vanities and counters and sinks all separately! ($ka-ching$)

Check out ValCucine in Soho. Also Henrybuilt in Soho. Metro Kitchen and Bath by the ABC Home store in NYC also represents several manufacturers.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the links. I will check them out tonight. Keep 'em coming if you can!

Try Home and Stone. I ordered from them online and was thrilled with my vanity. However, they have a store in Brooklyn:

I was recently in Home Depot Expo looking at ideas for vanities and have to say, to me, the majority of the displays were modern, clean lines, like what you're looking for. I find their prices to be on the high side, but like anything else, if you find what you like, I'm sure you can source it elsewhere for less. They had tons of vessel sinks. Not sure if you're interested in that look in any of your bathrooms.

I don't think we want vessels--I love the look, but for the two baths we'll use daily, I'll want the counterspace (!), and for the bath downstairs I think my mom will find it a PITA to put her stuff out when they stay over.

    bump--still looking!

Saw one from Sonia that's pretty nice, looked at the Duravit catalog, and some by Wet-style. Problem with some we've looked at most recently--not much choice with wood/colors. Want wood (veneer is okay, I think), not laminate. Some we might have considered only come in wenge or natural or bleached oak.

Those who had ones made custom, how did you find someone to make them for you, and were they very expensive? We are very limited as to space, so restricted to smaller sizes (e.g 20" deep at most for one or more bathrooms, and one or two baths might be able to take up to a 39" wide one).

Anyone use the same cab manuf. as your kitchen cabs? Why or why not should we consider going that route?

Hi cat_mom! Funny you mention using a kitchen cab manufacturer for a vanity. Because we so loved the pics of *your* kitchen cabs, we recently ordered our new vanity with a similar look from Kraftmaid Venecia (Tivoli line, slab fronts, with glossy cherry veneer). It was easy, and only took about 3 weeks from order to arrival. The only downside I'd say is price. A 48" vanity with Blumotion and full extension ran us around $1K, and from what I've seen here you can do better if you go non-custom. I know when you have 3 bathrooms to do, those extra $ can be budget busting. Though I must say I am very happy with the quality of the Venecia product. Good luck!

    callieandkarin--you're so sweet! Thanks!

I think they carry KM Tivoli at Expo (?), so will have to check it out. Do they have non-glossy veneers as well? None of our vanities will be that wide, and they have to be pretty shallow as I'd mentioned above. I would hope that will keep costs down somewhat. Besides, haven't seen much in the style we like for under $1K yet!

Any pics you can share, BTW?

I was looking for one for a powder room I've been working on. I've pretty much been only finding ones that are: really ugly, or cheaply made or insanely expensive. I've found more than a few that achieve a hat trick, and are all three: ugly, cheap, and pricy.

I also have a small depth to work with, didn't want a pedestal sink. I ended up buying this Sink: Semi-Casa sink

With the end look being something like this:
    {{gwi:1414083}}

Although I'm still unsure about the wainscoating, the paint color, or the granite. :-)

did you find your vanities yet ? Ebay has some good ones. not sure of the quality

No, still looking. We've seen some cool-looking ones online, but aren't not comfortable with not being able to see the actual vanity (or a sample) in person.

Will check out a few kitchen/bath places next week.

Why don't you go through the same people as your kitchen cabs?

I started my search for bathroom vanities about 3 years ago. LOL! Seems like they are all far too much money for a few slabs of wood glued together. I finally decided for my first bathroom (the master), I'm going to use an IKEA kitchen base cabinet and cut it down to size. (There are some examples on the IKEAfans website from people who have done this.) One side of the vanity is going to be exposed, so I'm going to buy some contact adhesive backed veneer from oakwood veneer to match the doors. I could use the matching end panels, but that would add up to an extra inch to the width and I want to use stock counters. If that works out (I'm sure it will), I'll do the same with the second and third bathrooms.

Not sure if you're still looking, but we had our master bath vanity custom built. It's made from two solid walnut planks. We're also in southern NY state, so if you'd like the contact info for our wood worker, let me know.

We have an RH warehouse in MD that has a sale the second Fri. and Sat. of every month. A coworker that I know found two vanities and saved between 50-80%.

    billyc--you've got mail!

    doingygirl -
as I sit up straight in my chair, we DO have an RH warehouse in MD??? Where is it located?? Now this could be dangerous :). I've been to the outlet in Leesburg and most of the things there were damaged, albeit significantly reduced.
    Thanks!

We have bought a vanity, several sinks and one piece of bath furniture from Sinks Gallery. Link to their bath furniture section included below. They have a seperate section for vanities as well. What I like about them is their customer service - every time I called I got a "real person" that was very helpful and knowledgeable. Great follow up too.

Check out their vessel sink section - the largest collection I have seen anywhere!

Cat mom...not sure if you're still looking, but if you are and are up for a little road trip Klaffs in Norwalk, CT has one of the better displays in the Tri-State area. If you're car-less, you could easily take MetroNorth to get there.
