carpet cleaning solution

I need to steam clean my carpets, they are not really dirty just dingy we are both smokers so there is a coating of nicotine to remove as well. its stainmaster carpet so I dont want to remove the scothgard treatment either. I find the commerical products tend to leave a residue even if you rinse the carpet that seems to attract dirt and they get dirty quicker

any good cleaning solution recipes? anyone tried borax?

what a good spot remover they are a couple of stains from overfilled flower pots

I'd try Capture powder. You can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Allergy companies also carry it, because it doesn't risk creating mildew in the carpet backing. I've used it on carpet and it did a decent job. A gallon bucket of it cost me somewhere in the $30-$40 range at Lowe's. They didn't carry the spray which you are supposed to mist the carpet with. I'm going to research whether that is really necessary. Anyway, it's a very gentle method, fast, and less labor-intensive.
