P-U Game Table

Did you ever play a dice game known as SKUNK?

It was popular in the early 50s. I loved the game as a kid (in part

I suspect, because of its name) and now I play it with my grandchildren.

I collected ceramic skunks when I was little. (DonÂt ask.)

The skunks and the shadow box in which they were displayed

disappeared about the time I turned 12, when my bedroom changed

from Little Girl Cute to Teenage Whatever.

I found the collection when I was cleaning out my folks garage shortly

after my mother passed away. IÂd completely forgotten about them.

At the time, it seemed like I was throwing out so many memories.

I suppose the bitter sweet surprise of finding them and recovering a

once forgotten bit of my childhood just wouldnÂt allow me to toss them.

So they have remained in the box in which I found them, moved from

here to there and back again, but never opened  until now.

The black and white salad dishes are from Crate and Barrel. Black

dinner plates are from MarshallÂs. The gold-rimmed skunk plates

were part of my skunk collection and hung on the wall of my bedroom.

One of the plates still had the plate hanger attached to it when I went to

haul the collection out. I made the pink napkins and placemats for this

yearÂs Easter Brunch.

The two top skunks are salt and pepper shakers (also part of the

original collection). I remember that I had names for all of them,

although I canÂt remember any of the names now.

The dice (and the score pad seen below) are from a vintage

1950s SKUNK game. The wimpy carnations are from my garden.

My husband thinks I've gone completely mad with this one.

I never heard of the game of Skunk! Your table is adorable!!
Skunk plates are certainly a unique item!
And your collection is wonderful! I agree, good to hold on to a part of our childhood.
I used to look for 4 leaf clovers and press them in the family Bible.
A blogger post about 4 leaf clovers made me remember them, and sure enough they are in the Bible from my Mom's house.
Great job on the placemats and napkins too!

I never heard of the game, but man that table and collection is right up my alley. It's precious. I'm so glad you found your collection, the plates are my favorite, but I love them all. The pink is the perfect accent color.

Very cute table! So nice that you found your skunk collection. Carnations look great IMO as mine aren't yet blooming!

I've never played Skunk altho I think I've heard of it. We played a lot of games 'back in the day' when families visited back and forth and few had TV's.

OA...you little stinker, you! SUPERB! I love your collection of "little skunks!"...and how cool, that you found it in your DM's garage! What a save! And, now, best of all, you've shared it with Holiday-ers!

The skunk plates are absolutely the cutest!...and the B&W salad plates are lovely & so perfect in the place setting. Great flatware & linens! The pink lights certainly puts a sparkle into the whole game!

Seeing the score card, I am sure I've played this game as a child...just the coolest, that you now play it with your GKs...TFS! Jeanne S.

ps...my shoulder blade muscle "junk" was mis-diagnosed & I am suffering from "Shingles" now...so I may not be able to participate this wk...hoping next wk is better! I did get some meds to help with pain & getting it under control. What awful "krip" (as you say!) So I'll be resting & inside alot for awhile...ugh! So, thanks for the t'scape!

Shingles! Holy smokes, Jeanne, singles are VERY painful. My friend had shingles and it took a while for her to get better. Are you able to get some sleep? Hang in there. We're all sending good vibes your way.

Jeanne, dang! I have another friend with shingles and I know its awful. Sending you good thoughts thru this.

As for OA's "aromatic table", Jeanne took the words right out of my head....

I don't know how you do these things Mz O-so-A-mazing!
I think you just elevated skunks to elegance with that pink and black setting. LOL.

Totally agree with everyone else's comments about this darling table. Never ever knew anyone who had a "thing" for skunks, but your collection along with the memories is priceless. How neat that you made your own placemats and napkins. My most favorite part has to be those precious little skunk plates! Very fun and very creative, OA. ;o)

P.S. Jeanne, so sorry you are out of commission for awhile. Sure hope you are all better soon.

Thanks, everyone, for all your compliments. So nice to hear such things from all my forum friends.

I didn't think about it as I was designing the table, but I guess having skunk plates does make me sort of special. What I can't figure out is, why didn't any of you ask where you could get your own skunk plates???

Come to think of it, the fact that I actually collected a bunch of skunks does put my sanity into question. This tidbit of information that you've all learned about me is something not one other living person knew (even my husband and grown children). Now that you know, I'm asking that you keep it under wraps. :-P

A nod to the color scheme: As the designers on HGTV are found of saying, I used the plates as my "inspiration piece" and went from there. Remember the pink and black bathrooms of the 50s? We had one and it was full-blown (along with an avocado and gold kitchen).

Must go now, I've thought of another game table idea.
Again, thanks for the cheering section.

What's wrong with collecting skunks? They are really cute little critters, fun personalities, and who didn't love Flower, Bambi's friend! But if this is your deep dark secret, then I'll sure keep it. LOL.

For some reason I wasn't the least bit surprised at you having skunk plates in your 'bag of tricks'. Your dish stuff is sort of like going into a candy store, never know what sweet treats will be there!

I love this! My grand-daughter often has me "read" her stories. That interprets as "Grandmama, make me up a story in your mind." One of the ones she really loves is about Sabrina Skunk who cannot cook. Her food looks wonderful but taste "stinky, stanky, skinky, skunky bad." Of course she learns to cook but her skill at bad cooking comes in handy when the wolf and fox come sneaking around. She would love your table. She has the decorating bug from her mama and grandmama already. This looks great! Susan
