I'm thinking the best thing would be to flush it out with plain water. Little at a time, then blot as you've been doing. Or a machine that will flush and extract like Little Green or carpet cleaner set to rinse.

Only reason for saying little at a time is so floor underneath doesn't get ruined. When you think its gone, run a fan on it.

I just spilled laundy detergent on rug I got some up but not much with a little cleaner like little green.

First I would dump some salt on it to stop sudsing....then either suck it up with a wet/dry vac or blot with dry towels....add water blot....more water, blot and repeat until it's all gone.

Bulldinkie, repeat, then repeat again. If it doesn't come out it will always be a dirt magnet.

Thank you for all your suggestions. "Fortunately" the spill was in our basement with concrete floor under the carpet, so no worrying about wet wood... I ended up with my shop vac and a bucket of water, dropping about a quarter cup of water at a time and vacuuming it up immediately. It took some time, but eventually the carpet didn't feel or smell soapy anymore. Glad it's over! The shop vac is extremely loud when you are sitting next to it for a couple of hours!
