I've seen it placed about everywhere. My favorite place was actually hidden in the drawer to the side of the cooktop. This gives you a very clean look.

If you are wanting to keep it up top on the counter I would place it so the controls are about a half inch away from the cooktop, centered front to back with the cooktop.
