Pro Range Concerns

I posted earlier about a Thermador range but after browsing this forum IÂm seriously worried about the reliability and quality of the pro ranges. Firstly my family cooks a lot; we do the whole gamut of stir fry, grilling, baking bread, pizza, cooking rice, pasta etc. Some of our pots are 18 in wide. Currently we do all of our cooking on a whirlpool el cheapo electric range in our rented house. WeÂre able to do everything on this range other than inability to really simmer well due to the limitation of electric ranges. My wife wants a gas range at least 36 inch in our new home for the greater freedom of movement and simmer burners.

Well the only ranges in that size tend to be pro-range. However IÂm having a hard time reconciling spending $5000+ on an appliance and possibly dealing with less reliability than in a $400 range ( not a single problem with the whirlpool in 3+ years). I thought about just getting a Bertazzoni as itÂs relatively cheap and if it malfunctions out of warranty I wonÂt be out of too much money. However, my 11 yr old son does quite a bit of broiling and baking using the oven timer so that rules out a Bertazzoni.

Are my concerns valid? Do I even have any alternatives to a pro range? Thanks for reading my long post.

The best thing you can do is pay 5 bucks for a one month subscription to consumer reports. at the same time check posts here and elsewhere. if you find a "Possibility" goggle the name and the model and the word reliability or repair record. You may find a good one.

Dont just look at one web-site as I have seen where they have gone into a "Feeding Frenzy" over one appliance or another and even pots and pans. One post something negative and the whole "Chorus" joins in.

Example--I was looking at the Emerald cookware set that is made for induction. Found a site, where one user claimed
the pot "Literally exploded" on a burner setting of 2 and while boiling water---You wouldnt believe the other horror stories I saw. Since I hadn't open the box, I started to carry it down to the car, and take them back to Bed, Bath & Beyond--where I bought them,---but I decided to post a question about those pans on this site, and several users were very helpful---then checked a few more places
End of story, we kept the pans and are using them every day and love them.
So, with a little work, I suspect you may find a good one.
You may have seen my post where Consumer Reports states that the "Pro Style" anything tend not to be reliable--but that could be too big a generalization for them to make?

Many of us have pro-style ranges without serious reliability problems. I've had a DCS range for 6 1/2 years and after a few minor problems under warranty, it's been working fine. Every brand has some lemons and you'll certainly hear more about them since people with problems post loudly, often and vociferously. Do your research, get the best you can in terms of function and features and hope for the best. Keep some money aside in a repair fund (or buy an extended warranty if you must). It's not a lot different than buying a car - you can get the most reliable brand and still have problems. Good luck.
