Viking Gas Range

Hi All,

We are moving in a new home in July '10. We are in the market for the applicances as we have to leave the one we have with the home we just sold.

My wife likes Viking gas range (VDSC 530 - 4B or VGSC530 - 4B), but when I went on the net, saw all kinds of reviews from customers who had lots of problem and also customers who are very happy with Viking. I am confused which gas range I should buy; Viking or GE/Fridgidaire/Kenmore (We don't like the looks of these brands) and we have missed the opportunity of getting rough in for the cooktop and wall oven.

Need help as early as possible as we have to make decision at the earliest.

Thanks

DJ

Have you looked into Wolf Appliance?

Here is a link that might be useful: Wolf Appliance

    Wolf, Bluestar, DCS, Capital.

Yes we have seen Wolf range, I like it but my wife who cooks a lot likes Viking. Also we went to browse for appliances yesterday evening to the appliances store and saw Fridgidaire, which my wife liked. (we are using at the current home all appliances from Fridgidaire since seven years and have no problem at all). As we are moving, we want to upgrade in appliances too. Also if someone can help us in a slide in gas range (I would like the looks and performance-don't want repairs as moving in a new home would cost us xtra $$$)

    Please help.

    Thanks

If you don't want repairs then stay away from Viking.

Looks/Snob Appeal Wolf with red knobs

Cooks Bluestar 190 colors available with no upcharge

If you are considering a "professional" type range, I suggest going to local appliance dealers and/or distributors where you can see them operate and even try them out for yourself. I ended up buying a BlueStar due to their superior open burner performance (higher heat, lower simmer).

    OP,

jejvtr is right, there is some Viking bashing here, and there are BS reps here. So, go do a good search on Viking ranges or "Viking range problems" or "Viking range support" and read all the horror stories and problems people are having as posted on _other_ sites. There's a lot of posts! More, a lot more, than for BS or Wolf or Thermador or Capital or AGA...

Then of course take into consideration that posts represent on a small representation of all the Viking ranges out there, and that people are much more likely to post about a problem then a non-problem. Even so, that was enough to change my initial plan of going with a 36" AG Viking to something else (and I chose BS over Wolf in the final decision).

Odds are you can still get a perfect Viking AG, but there's still the chance (small? significant?) that they aren't making them the way they used to (huh, that's a common theme across so many appliances these days) and you get a problem unit.

Ask the contractors you might talk to. Go to a cooking class that uses these ranges and talk to attendees/cooks. Each time you now go to a nice restaurant, talk to the chefs and see what they use at home.

I've seen a alot of Viking bashing as well and I don;t own one, but I would find your local rep and ask them about service. See if they can give you an honest answer as to how many service calls they get. If they also sell Wolf, etc., they'll usually be honest since they're probably going to get your money from another brand. Also, I watch Barefoot Contessa and she used Viking in her original house kitchen. I noticed when she added the barn she put Viking in again so there is at least one person out there who obviously would do it again (and did). :-)

Thanks Guys/gals for your kind suggestions.

I searched the web for Viking and have seen a lot of complains for viking ranges; lot of repairs. Somebody suggested Fridgidaire Gallery collection slide in gas range, which we are going tomorrow to see at a local store. Any suggestions on this.
I saw model # CGDS3065KF which looks nice and as we are going for the granite counter top I hope this will look good. Please give your valuable feedback.

    Thanks

I have had Viking 30 inch all gas range for nearly 10 years. I am keeping it for my current kitchen remodel. I may switch it out with an induction unit later on. I am thinking that I might move the Viking to our rental house when that kitchen gets remodeled. I have not decided. So I am saving a little money and keeping the range that is a decade old.

I have really enjoyed cooking on it. I cook alot. The infrared broiler is awesome. I am very happy with it.

I had a GE gas range before the Viking. That unit needed to have the computer module replaced. The oven did not work without it. We repaired it ourselves but if we had brought in a technician, it would have cost us several hundred $. On a range that only cost $1000, most people would have junked it. The problem with ranges that have computer modules is that the electronics is the weak link.

On the all gas Viking ranges, there is really no electronics to break down. If you take care of it, it should last you many decades. The only thing that goes out regularly is the oven ignitor. Unfortunately, most gas ovens will burn out the oven ignitor after a few years. If you learn how to replace it, then it is an easy job. We did it ourselves for $50. If you get the dual fuel, you won't have that issue.

    That is like saying...

I searched the web for Jaguars and have seen lots of complaints.

    Somebody suggested a Hyundai Elantra.

Are you looking for a premium range or an entry level range?

I do not own one but I know several people that do. Some have had them many years, others a few years. Everyone one of them loves their range and would buy another.

One more important note, and with regard to Viking issues or all the perfect Vikings out there:

I'd have to summarize the dozens/hundreds of Viking experience posts (GW and all over the internet) as follows. The posts about a Viking being trouble free with a user that loves Viking are for machines probably purchased over 3-5 years ago. And it seems many/most of the problem posts are about a machine purchased recently, say in the last 3-5 years.

Thanks Kaismom for that valuable info and deeageaux you are right too. Every machine would have problems. We went to a local appliance store and the sales girl showed us Capital range all gas which is on sale @ 2999/CDN. Is it worth buying. I have seen that range but had not done research on that. I am told that it is a professional range like Viking.
    Any input on that?

    Thanks

We had a Viking range for 10 years and had no problems. I was happy with the burners, the clean-up ease and the durability. We ended up buying another Viking since we felt so strongly about the old one....know a number of people who had problems with the Wolf, and didn't feel like paying the premium for the name.
