resurface old cast iron tub...?

We have an old cast iron bath tub which is in need of a resurfacing. I saw a kit at Home Depot for $32 for 'do it yourself' application but was wondering if anyone has used it or any other similar product? Or if would be best (but more $$$) to have it done professionally?

Think the bathroom was built around the tub (!) so not able to remove it w/o breaking it apart in pieces & I also like the cast iron vs. fiberglass or steel of most new ones so would like to keep the tub if a resurfacing would last awhile & be feasible.

Sure would appreciate any ideas, prior experience from anyone!

We were in a similar situation. A clawfoot cast iron tub came with the house and was stored in the garage. I looked into having it refinished, and got prices of $400 (interior only) to $800 (interior and sandblasted exterior at the guy's shop). Both guys would warrant the surface for 5 years. The outside was pretty bad, so we ended up deciding to just buy a new tub for about $1000. Probably not what you wanted to hear...

We had great luck with resurfacing. It was actually a shower enclosure. It cost about $300. It has been 3 years and not one problem. I don't miss the mauve!
I would not DYI this.
