Bathroom Update on the Cheap

We completed our kitchen remodel 6 months ago... At that time, we used 20" porcelain tile (on a diamond) though-out the kitchen & family room. We purchased enough to complete the remaining downstairs (dining room, entry-way, laundry room & bathroom). So, 6 months later, I need to get the floor completed which leads me into the bathroom... where we plan to update it (such a slippery slope!) on the cheap.

Currently, we will remove our 36 inch 30 year-old painted vanity & replace with something a bit more contemporary... not over the top, simple, and smaller (30 inches). We really don't want to go down the path of removing marble currently in the bathtub/shower combo, but I'm concerned how matchy-matchy we need to be with the vanity counter vs the shower area. For example, should we try to match the marble with a travertine or marble topped vanity in a similar color? or can we do something totally different (darker granite, etc.)?

Thoughts are appreciated! Also, I am just not in love with any vanities I have seen. Any recommendations? We live in So Cal. Again, thanks.
