Onyx counters it is!!!

My bid came in today for white onyx counters in our master bath. OUCH but fortunately i'm in a mood to spend money...so we're going for it :)

I'm not going to be able to wire in underlighting (too late in the remodel process to string new wire) but i'll do some of the battery pucks instead so its lit :)

i can't wait to see the creamy white onyx on the chocolate cherry cabinets!

i don't suppose anyone has pics of onyx counters do they? I've only seen one in a mag.

Sounds gorgeous! And no, it's never too late to run another wire -- just too expensive (sometimes).

Our old master bath had some sort of solid surface countertops that had a very onyx'y look to them. (NOT cultured marble or cultured onyx which I don't care for.) and the effect (when DH had a flashlight under there to fix a plumbing leak) was gorgeous! So much so that I've been keeping my eyes open for the same type of solid surface, and of course, I've never seen it again...

    Can't wait to see them!

I am jealous :) wow those will look heavenly! see the other thread on onyx vessels. i have posted a very interesting onyx sink+ counter.

we're in a five level townhouse sweeby, with no connecting walls to the end run...so to restring a new wire...e gads, yards and yards and yards of wall and floor have to be opened up. (which we did at the beginning of the remodel). DH is feeling sorry for me so he's indulging me on the onyx LOL but i think if i proposed that...he might divorce me heh heh

phraoh...i saw that sink you posted :) GORGEOUS! I know you have the same obsession with onyx I do (I think you started me LOL) and I just keep coming back to it over and over. after our granite and marble were sold out from under us, i reached the "awe f it" point...and that onyx kept talking to me heh heh :) so now I can get up in the morning and talk back lol

    Igloochic,

Please make the following two trips - One to los angeles and one to hongkong

In LA - go to the Americana Mall in Glendale and check out the concierge's counter. Green onyx -top, front, sides ohlalaa

In HK - go to the peninsula hotel in kowloon, on the top floor the Felix restaurant has a white onyx bar probably 20 feet long, 5" thick and 2 feet wide. And it is UNDERLIT! We went there for drinks only ($$$) and to see the men's restroom (another thread) :)

I dream of onyx. I await, jealously, the photos of your masterpiece.

Sounds great ! Do post pics when you're done . Curious though , how porous is it for a vanity top ?

well heckfire, the pics of the slab arrived and it has huge orange veins. they're going to have to work harder, because I want a WHITE onyx countertop with white veins...a tiny bit of color would be ok, but not huge orange veins. I'm sad :(

onyx is prone to staining and needs to be sealed well, but it does work well for a bathroom where you're less likely to be pouring soy sauce and red wine on the counters (ok my bathroom will see some red wine but we'll set that on the croc tiles) :oP my inspiration is a kitchen done in honey onyx counters on a lemon cabinet...gorgeous to say the least!

here i sit on bedrest and you're sending me to hong kong and LA Mr. P? :OP Was that white bar white??? I know it exists...but this might be a bigger challenge than I anticipated :(

Sounds like it'll be stunning i-chic!!!

    Hope you're feeling better, Igloo.

I'm off to the granite placs again today and tomorrow and so on and so on... and would be happy to look for white onyx for you. I'm in Portland and don't have a clue what is entailed in shipping...I've shipped from L.A. to Portland...but I think to Alaska is a bit more difficult.

Anyway, I'm serious about looking for your onyx. I'd also like to suggest Calacatta. I have a slab going in today that has all of your bathroom colors but is predominantly white. If I could figure out how to post a pic..I would..but I am so technically challenged.

Calacatta is an option here :) and thanks marlene! Sould you see some lovely white onyx, please note the name. we can work with our fabricator on it. Thats very sweet of you.

Have SOOO much fun! It's a wonderful thing...stone shopping :) I find new ones to fall in love with every trip LOL

I have a high tank toilet in our powder room where the onyx sink (green and red) will go. I decided I'm going to have the top piece replicated in onyx (same colors) just o get a bit more of it in the house LOL

Well, the Calacatta is in and looks gorgeous. I thought of you, Igloo, because one of the fabricators is from Bergeson Tile in Astoria, OR and I was thinking that's where you got some of your tile (but my memory is so far gone..I'm probably hallucinating).

I didn't make it to the granite places today because of the install, but tomorrow it's Pental and Intrepid...and if I have the time to Casabella where they do have the white onyx but it may have those orange stripes. I'll call around to other places...of course, if it is "I" who end up with that gorgeous onyx in another bathroom, it's YOU who will get the bill! (Take a look at Casa-bella.com and peek at their white onyx...)

blue found me a suplier in california that has me drooling :) but before i go really nuts...when you're at Pental, I know it's alot to ask, but they are my supliers, suplier, so could you pretty please take a quick look and see if they have any really white onyx at the Portland location? And there are two others I'm looking at that might be rare, called geode (it's brown and white and tan and yummy!!) and the other is called stalattite brown onyx. since they already do business with my supplier I think they could easily send it to seattle and then to me.
I will trade you for a king salmon? Heh heh really though if it's not too much time, i'd love to have you ask in person about those at Pental.

lol and try not to look at the onyx too long dear...it's terribly addictive. ask Pharaoh lol I think his addiction is even worse than mine!

And Mr. P...visit this website...and take towel with you...the drooling is involuntary!!!

Here is a link that might be useful: drool worthy onyx

Dawn, I will absolutely look for you and let you know. Send me an email at pdxmarlene@aol.com so I can make certain I let you know the results. Sometimes I've problems accessing Gardenweb.

Oh, and do look at Casa-bella.com.....I think you might like the white onyx they have.

With regard to Pharaoh, I'm one of his groupies!!

okay, this is my last post on this thread, otherwise I will go crazy talking about onyx :)

Igloochic, on HGTV, there was a show called 'Amazing beach front homes'. There was a house with a stunning white onyx sink and countertop! Couldnt find it on their website and i dont have tivo :(
check out modulmarble in LA. They have gorgeous slabs of onyx including geode. they have a website and maybe they can ship a slab to you...You must make a trip to socal. I sometimes just go window shopping in the stone yards to see the latest beauties...

    marlene, ;)

Thanks Marlene, I'll send one out :o) You're wonderful!!!

Venetian Stone Works in Irvine, Ca has some gorgeous examples and onyx you can purchase. I'll try to attach one here. In the middle of the country, the InterContinental Hotel in Milwaukee has an awesome long underlit onyx bar - so beautiful & sexy!

We received a postcard from a design company believe 2 or 3 years ago, with a beautiful red underlit sink set on a custom wrought iron stand & want that so badly for our main powder room. Unfortunately, our designer (since fired) that I gave it to lost it :( If anyone has seen anything like what I'm describing (much more traditional looking than the photo I'm going to attempt to attach), please let me know!

Well, I've tried everything, including posting to the Gallery, so will give up on attaching the photo - sorry! I'll be happy to email to anyone - it's a very modern white & blue underlit onyx countertop/sink and mirror!

Dawn, Pental only had two slabs of onyx and they weren't even close to what you're looking for. They did locate some white onyx at another shop that I'm familiar with and I will go take a look next week for you. Also, if you have a chance to look at the slabs at Casabella and you like them, I will be happy to look at them in person for you. It's a very nice place.

Pental looked up the other two materials you're interested in and had nothing under those names.

Wish I had better results for you...but I still think Casabella may have what you like.

    Let me know.

Thanks Marlene, and I didn't even get my email out LOL

I'll look at Casabella...the issue here that becomes a problem is getting the slabs to alaska...dh and i are going to have to discuss it i guess...we do have a shipping contract we can use, but then a slab of granite is a bear to ship on it's own, which is why it's nice to use our guy's suppliers. it sounds like i'm going to have to do a face to face meeting as soon as i'm allowed out of bed with the owners.

i hate it when i get an obsession started...i mean i love the outcome...but the dog garned work to make it happen in this freaking state, well that's annoying as all get out!

I can relate to the "once I get something in my mind" syndrome...being a bit obsessive/compulsive myself...I did just go the other yard that was suppose to have the white onyx but it was actually very, very gold.

Hope you feel better and get out of bed soon.....it can be very expensive staying put in front of a computer!

Let me know if I can do anything for you...I would be happy to! You've been so kind for so many with your time and idea and most importantly, sense of humor...it'd be a pleasure to "give back" a bit.
