First Tree for 2008 - Candy Tree

Here's the first tree up this year, the candy tree! What's neat about this tree is that this room back in the 50s housed a small candy shop that I've had several people tell me they remember when they were kids. There is a door that leads to the wrap-around porch to the right of that window which is where the kids would come in.

I first did this tree in 2004 and HATED it so much that I didn't even put it up in 2005....it was that ugly! I had it on a 7' slim tree and it just didn't work. Last year I decided to switch the trees used for this one and another one that I wasn't happy with....and it worked. A candy tree can't be a tall skinny tree.....it has to be a short chubby one! The topper, tree skirt and stuff hanging from the ceiling is all new this year.....75% off bargains after the season last year.....everything on this tree is at least a 50% off buy. The tree skirt I got off of ebay for $48 (including shipping) and it is a retired Dept 56 skirt that retailed for $125....so that was my big splurge.

bourbonlady, What a pretty candy tree. I love how you added a candy garland around the windows. That is a very nice touch. I'm happy for you that you found the perfect tree for you to use.

My grandkids would love this tree! How many more are you putting up this year?

BEAUTIFUL!!!! I keep telling myself 'You don't need a candy tree'. But yours is sooo pretty. Can't wait to see what you do next.

Wow, I love this tree. Nice job.

Beautiful candy tree and garlands. I'd sure love to see a closeup of that pretty tree skirt. Is that cupcakes and a gingerbread house on it? How about a closeup of some of the ornaments too, they all look so neat. Loved the story about that room having been a candy store once upon a time--how neat is that? ;o) Luvs

What a lovely tree! You all are definitely expanding my taste in decorating! I can't remember, are you the first to get a tree up this year?

I hope I don't end up being the last! LOL!

What a cute candy tree! I love how you have the ornaments and snowflakes hanging from the ceiling.

Bright, you sooo need to do a candy tree this year! All that sugary cuteness...how can you resist??? (That's my best enabling voice talking to you).

Pdg777, I think I have her beat on being first. I posted photos of my tree with vintage/antique ornaments last week in the thread about garland.

What a sweet (pun intended) looking tree - I just love it and love the candy garland around the windows. What a neat story that the room was once a candy store. My 'kitchen' tree had sort of a candy theme going with it but not near dramatic as yours. Oh so many many new ideas......thanks for sharing - I am looking forward to seeing your other trees....

I love the tree. You did a fabulous job and love how you did the things hanging and of course the candy garland. Beautiful!

Thank you! This is one of those trees that has taken a while to evolve....I wish I had taken a picture of it the first year it went up, it was SO UGLY!

Betty, I'm looking forward to my neices and nephew with this one (5 of them, 7 and under)! I'm putting up 12 full sized ones this year, along with several 4' and unders!

Luvs, I'll pull out the digital tonight and get some more photos. Yes that is a gingerbread house and cupcakes....it's a neat skirt!

Dream, I saw your vintage tree and loved it!

I'm so glad you all enjoy it! I think that's my favorite part of all of this....watching everyone enjoy it!

How did I miss this post Alex? The tree just screams for children! Bet the little ones try getting to those big pieces of candy. LOL

I'm with ya on Christmas tree overload~i'll have at least 8-10 this year. My newest one is black w/ silver spangles~it was a store display. I'll use lime green beaded ornaments on it.

Have you added trees thru the years, or did you start with a 'bunch'? LOL

Patty, Ooooooh, can't wait to see your new tree, sounds like so much fun! I would love to do something like that, but it would totally clash with my house....my duaghter's tree is as close to something like that that I can get....should be interesting this year!

I've been adding throughout the years, and they just keep evolving. This year, I'm adding some new (actually recycled with mostly things that I already had) smaller trees, then I've pulled out several trees that I found at garage sales before my brother's wedding 9 years ago, and those will group together in pots I used this summer for annuals, on my front porch...not sure how they will evolve from there.

I can't show photos, but in addition to my family Christmas tree, I make a candy tree and a cookie cutter tree. Yours looks great!

Bourbonlady (I'm a vodka gal myself),

I have always wanted to hang ornaments from the ceiling, but have been at a loss as to how to hang them. Can you answer some questions, please?
    1. What is your ceiling make out of (mine is drywall-gypsum board- with a spray texture)?
    2. How do you attach the string to the ceiling?
    3. What type of string do you use (fishing line, maybe)?

    Thanks, OA

    Alex,
what a beautiful tree!!! I'll certainly keep this one in my inspiration folder. I love that you hung items from the ceiling above too and decorated the garland around the windows to keep with the theme. It's just perfect.

    Alex,
Thats such a beautiful tree and all the details around it really add so much. I love candy theme trees in general too. They are so whimsical and fun.

OA, That ceiling is smooth-painted drywall. This is my first year for ceiling hanging....so I'm sure there is a better way! I just took white tea-cup hooks from WalMart and just screwed them directly into the drywall. Those ornaments are very light....but we'll see how they hold throughout the season (fingers-crossed.) Yes, just plain fishing line.

Here are some close-ups of the skirt and ornaments:

Fantastic tree skirt for the Candy Tree, and the ornaments are delightful. Especially being so over-sized, that makes it such a fun tree. How could you not smile and feel like a kid walking into this room!

    hugs, Karen

What a 'Sweet' tree. You did such a great job on this one. I agree w/Betty...my Gkids would love this tree too.
I also love how you decorated around the window. Nice extra touch.

Oh gosh, thanks for the close ups. That tree skirt is really great, I love it. You sure found some great ornaments too! I agree with Karen, it makes me smile and feel like a kid! Thanks for sharing. Luvs

I love your tree and tree skirt. Beautiful! Last year I shamelessly copied the candyland trees I saw on this forum for a little tree I put in my kitchen. I may have to steal your idea of hanging the snowflakes from the ceiling.

Bourbon Lady, Will you come to South Dakota and help me decorate for christmas this year? !HAHA! I Love,Love this tree! Keep the pics coming!

Juicy, I would love to come to South Dakota and help you decorate!!!! I have never been there and I do envy the white winters!!!! There are only so many ways one can decorate an Oklahoma wheat field....LOL

Delph, don't be ashamed of the art of copying!!! As my mother has always said...."I may not be able to afford it, I may not be able to come up with the ideal, but I can copy anything!" My goodness....I always go to the most expensive places, soak in everything they've done, then search out the bargains. Another thing my mother has always said is...."You know what, unless you put most things side by side, nobody knows the difference, it's all about how you put it together." Her words again tonight.

Karen, Jane, Luvs.... It's all about the smiles! It doesn't matter if you are 2 or 92....there is a magic and WOW.... There is something about this time of year that transcends everything else, it simplifies, enriches, enhances, clarifies. It brings about a fresh and simplified understanding of life prior to starting a new year......

    What a lovely tree!
    Is it edible, mmmmh...?

Your tree is so cool. I have never seen anything like it. I will tell my girlfriend about it and I'm sure she will drool over it with me. If I had more rooms in the house, that would be one I would like to try. What a great tree.
