Oven Size: Monogram vs Electrolux

This isn't a question, but rather info that some might find helpful. I took my trusty tape measure with me to the appliance store today, and met another lady with her pans in hand looking at the same ovens: Electrolux, GE Monogram, Bosch and Wolf. The oven racks on EVERY oven I measure were between 15 - 15 1/2' deep, that includes the Bosch bottom oven with no induction fan. So the cavity may be deeper without the fan, but you can't make use of it. Lady could not put her pan in legthwise in any of the 5 ovens we looks at (but she can with her old GE at home). Width - wise was also very close. I measured between the side support racks (racks may measure wider because they fit inside the supports). All of them were 22" - 23" useable width. In fact the Electrolux was slightly wider than the Monogram. The design of the Electrolux extension racks also allowed more vertical room for food. The Monogram racks are very bulky and take up a lot of space. Bosch didn't have any extension racks. I see alot of postings regarding the interior size of these ovens, hope this helps.

I think I'm the lady-with-pans that you talked to in the store today! It was great comparing notes with you. I'm heavily leaning towards the Electrolux Icon Professional. It was helpful to see the measurements of the racks--since the racks reflect usable space, for the most part.

Hello time4tea. I thought we might meet up here. Great talking with you in store today. I'm with you on the Electrolux oven. I think it's the best bang for the bucks out there. Dodge59 will be happy to have won some more converts.

I'd like to know what Dodge59 says about the opening in between the 2 glass panes in the door. Right now that's my only concern--whether anything could spill in there or moisture from condensation accumulates--it'd be extremely difficult to clean in that space. Otherwise it's my frontrunner.

Did you measure the racks on the NON icon E'Lux? For some reason I have it in my mind that the Icon racks are almost an inch more shallow than the regular E'Lux racks. I could be wrong but I recall doing this measurement myself but can't find my notes.

We have had the Elux Icon Designer Series for 5 years now.
It has baked, I think, 4 or 5 turkeys, and several hams and pork roasts, but No chickens-(Which I understand can be quite Messy)--soooo our oven may not get as heavy use as some of you ladies may do? Wife doesn't like chicken, but I do, so when I does chicken, I usually do it outside.
At any rate, We have not had to clean betweeen the 2 panes of glass yet.
I do recall a lady that did have something spill beween the glass panes on the oven, and I got out the operation manual for the oven to see how to remove the Inside Pane to clean (If necessary). Actually it's quite easy, there are 2 "Catches" for the class as the bottom of the door held there by phillips screws as I recall, Remove those screws, and the "Catches" or holders for the glass and the hole piece of glass lifts right out.
I would download the operation manual for the oven and read about it there, or better yet, go back to the store and see if they will demonstrate it for you.
We chose the Icon over the Non Icon because at least at that time, the glass window was much larger on the Icon, and we knew the oven would be below counter--so with bigger window, less stooping to see inside it. However if you are installing above counter, then of course the Smaller window would "Hide More Sins"?
Anyway the glide out racks, in the event we feel we need to check on, baste, bless---or whatever is in the oven, make it very easy to Do.
Good luck with your pending Decisions!!!

Hi, Texaskitchtoo, Yes we did measure the rack depth and oven width on both Icon and regular Elect. Tthey were the same, I think 15 1/4".
Dodge, Glad to hear the open door hasn't a problem. Given your background, do you have any opinion on the pro/con of seal going around the door or around the oven face? Is it just preference?
Also what is your experience/opinion of the Electrolux vent hood?
    Thank you

I got out the manual for the oven, as I was gonna search "Our Archives" anyway for my vent hood info.
Anyway, reading thru the manual it shows how to remove the oven door, but not the glass we talked about earlier---So I musta called Elux Customer Service to find out that info for the user that had a spot between the glass, so I was going from memory on what Elux told me, as far as removing the glass---so at my age---I would double check that, I did look at mine and I do see the clips that hold the glass and the 2 screws---but do double check that--as Me Ramm chips gettint kinda "Ancient"---ya know what I mean?, course ya don't!!!! LOL.

Reading the manual they caution You against cleaning that gasket, "Do not immerse the oven door in water or clean the oven door gasket" Also, "Care should be taken not too rub, damage or remove the gasket.Based on this, I would think that one mounted on the door (instead of the oven face) would be more likely to be damaged, like when you are cleaning the glass in the door? for example.
The door is apparently very easy to remove, but I for one am not gonna do it just to clean it---easier to remove that inside glass if ever necessary and lighter than a whole door too?

OK on to the vent question. First I have no experience/opinion of the Elux Vent Hood. My wife did not want a visible vent hood, I did (but you ladies know how that one goes---hint- no visible hood in our kitchen.
So I got hold of a company called HVAC in San Jose Calif.
They were extremely helpful and told us (even down to the last Nut and bolt) what we would need for proper venting of our kitchen. Here's what we got and the price we paid 11/09/2006.

    Fantech 0-100% variable speed controller (SCD5) $47

Fantech External Wall mounted Exterior Centrifugal
    fan for 8 inch round duct, 435 cfm (FRFN-RVG 8XL) $249.75

    Fantech round metal elbow
    0-90 degrees(adjustable bend) for 8" round duct $8.50

    10" x 10" grill (HQTH-10x10 grille $20

    Round Transistion 10" square to 8" round (HQTH-8") $15
Total (Inclues Shipping & sales tax) $385.53

This setup works great for us, the lowest speed still sucks up steam and holds up a napkin to it grill, and makes a very slight humming sound. If we kick the speed up all the way, and we did , once, it can make quite a bit of noise, most of it rushing air, but we don't do that often , as last time we did, our himilain cat was atop the stove when we kicked that vent on full "Blast" and for months after that cat looked like a "Mexican Hairless".

I hope You find this post helpful to your questions and I would get hold of HVAC as far as your vent needs go, they dont charge anything for helping you design the system that bests fits your needs and at least the price was pretty reasonable (at least in Nov of 06)

Dodge59 (Gary)--you are so helpful! It's good to hear that in 5 years, you haven't had to clean between the glass on the door.

Regarding the gasket placement, I think the Gasket on the non-Icon is on the oven door. The Icon had the Gasket on the the oven face. So the Icon oven door is much easier to clean--all glass. The Monogram has the gasket on the door too, just like the non-Icon.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Electrolux Icon Professional series. But this forum is great, and I'm looking forward to hearing other feedback before making my final decision.

Well I was back in the Appliance stores again today, imagine that. This is becoming a full time job. While there I measured some of the ovens again, and this time I wrote down all the measurements rather than trust my aging memory cells. Again I am measuring the depth of the rack, and the width between the side support rails. Monogram 21" x 15 1/2, Electrolux: 22 1/2 x 15, Electrolux Icon: 22 1/2 x 14, Bosch 22 1/2 x 15 1/4 (same on both convection and thermal ovens) , Viking Designer 22 1/4 x 13 1/4, Viking Pro: 23 x 15 1/4.
Monogram is the narrowest because the support racks protrude more into the cavity. The Viking Pro is deeper and wider than the Viking Designer model. And the Electorlux Icon IS is 1" smaller in depth than the reg Electrolux! (Want to correct my earlier post when I said they were the same.)
    Hope this helps to clarify.

Yeah that is what I recall on the Icon racks. I'm not sure why. Maybe the convection fan is deeper? We really liked the Icon Designer but after thinking through our needs, I'm going to try to stick with 27" instead of making the wall opening wider. This is pretty limiting and they dont' make the Icon in the 27" width. So now I'm eying the new E'lux oven+micro combo. It will save some height in a stacked configuration. Shame cause I wanted the speedoven, but I just don't think it will work for us.

I understand your dilemma. Now I just realized that my MW won't work where I aws planning on installing it in a cabinet above the counter. I suddenly realized it will be very difficult to work on the counter with the MW over it. It will come out much further than the 12" cabinets there now. Don't know why it took me this long to figure that out. So now where does the MW go? I'm going to raise this issue over on the kitchen forum and see what good ideas they have.
For my double oven, this last set of measurements made up my mind. I'm definitely going with the Electrolux regular. Now I have to get it ordered by tomorrow to get the 10% rebate. That's $300 I can use elsewhere.
I really did want knobs instead of touch screen, but even Wolf doesn't have knobs. And Viking's repair issues scared me off.

Hi again fun2Cook - I wasn't able to get away to the store during my lunch break; otherwise we might've run into each other again!

The oven rack measurements are helpful. I now need to decide between the larger capacity (non-Icon) or the less visible gasket on the oven face (Icon). Hmmm.

What about the Bosch? Why did you elminate it from consideration?

Does anyone else have thoughts on the Bosch ovens?

Ahh....Now I feel like I wasn't crazy when looking at ovens. I was looking for depth and crossed off the Electrolux ICON for its lack thereof. An inch and a half can make a lot of difference with the number and size of pans we like to fit in an oven. In hindsight, I may have put too much weight on that factor, but I was beginning to think I'd imagined the difference. Gary, does yours measure deeper, because I thought we'd decided that your oven and my Monogram were pretty close in depth, which was making me think I'd lost my mind somehow when measuring oven interiors.

Time4tea, I had seriously considered Bosch, but the current models are brand new for them...Made differently and in a different plant, if I remember correctly. There are a lot more electronics and features than they've offered before. Maybe all great, but I hesitate to buy the first of any completely new attempt. No one I talked to that sold them could feel very confident in recommending them with the lack of history, and the BSH reputation for less than stellar customer service. This isn't any practical experience to share with you, and I'm not the person you were asking, but only my particular thought process in Xing the Bosch off my list.

Tomorrow I will see if I can find that post I put up about the size of my oven, Recall I made measurements even in the area of the convection fan, and as I call that protrudes about an inch into the middle of the oven. If I can't find the post, I will remeasure.

Found it! It's in this one, Gary...

Here is a link that might be useful: Discussion that includes Dodge59's oven dimensions :-)

Well I went ahead and ordered my oven today. I did get the 30" Electrolux, non-Icon. Gary my measurements may be different from yours, because I didn't measure the depth of the cavity itself like you did. I just measured the depth of the rack. I thought that gave a better measurement of usable depth. The way the racks are designed, it would be difficult to have a pan extend behind them. They may stop short of the fan housing by design to allow better convection circulation? A fun comparison would be to go into a store with both models, and pull a rack from each to compare them. Really it doesn't make any sense to me why they would be different. I would think they would keep the racks the same size to share parts across the product line. But Viking did it too. The size between the "designer" and "Professional" were different also. Anyway both DH and I prefer the styling on the non-Icon, that's just a matter of personal taste. The fact that it was a little less expensive, and had 10% rebate was icing on the cake. I think with either model you get a great oven at a reasonable price. I'm happy. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

You are correct My measurements were made from the back of the oven to the front of the rack. I didn't think it mattered if the back of a pan or whatever extended back past the back of the rack, but I'm certainly not in your ladies category when it comes to what is/or isn't necessary as far as getting nice "even baking". In about the center "Height wise", the pan could not extend much past the rack or it would hit the area where the convection fan is.
Anyway, congradulations with your decision fun2cook, and as we all know, (even me) what counts is "How it cooks/bakes"--- Please let us know as I don't recall seeing any posts about actual performance of the Elux Non Icon Model.

Congrats on your oven purchase. I have a 30" elex - non Icon double wall oven. The main reason I went with non-Icon is I wanted a white oven.

There may be better ovens out there, but I'm in love with my Elux oven. Have only had it since March and I'm still learning how to use it.

BTW- it can take ages for that rebate to get processed. I just got mine a few weeks ago and I bought the oven at the end of December.

I love the savings on the Electrolux 30" dbl ovens just below the Icon, but am confused by something on A.J. Madison: the description of these ovens says there is only one glide rack per oven.

But I swear I looked at the same ovens at my Lowe's, and there were two glide racks and one regular in each oven!

Does anyone know what's what, to keep me from making another trip to Lowe's? (Beginning to hate that place.)

This is from the E'Lux web site. With the Double oven it looks like there are 2 total, but I'm sure you can swap them around. With the Single oven there are 2. The ICON double oven gives you 6 glide racks. Wow, that is probably more than the difference in the cost between the regular and Icon.

    30" double w/ Wave
    Luxury-Glide Racks (Upper Oven) 1
    Luxury-Glide Racks (Lower Oven) 1
    Conventional Racks (Upper Oven) 1
Convection Roasting Racks (Upper Oven) 1
Convection Roasting Racks (Lower Oven) 1

    30" SINGLE w/ Wave
    Luxury-Glide Racks 2
    Conventional Racks 1
    Convection Roasting Racks 1
