suggestions for tree topper

This year I'm going to have the biggest tree I've ever had- a 10'. I've purchased extra large red/gold balls along with some crystal drops and crystal snowflakes to go with my old ornaments. I also have a pretty red/green/gold plaid wired ribbon for some kind of accent. But I'm stumped on what to do for a topper. Everything looks really small to me. I thought about a large bow (although I was trying to get away from frou-frou) and something "spiky", like the long picks from hobby lobby. But everything I've found looks "las vegas"-y! Also found a large red/gold finial tree topper from Lowe's or a large crystal snowflake from Lowe's. What do you think?? Any suggestions or pics would be appreciated!!

superchick, It depends on your personal taste, but there are some nice big Christmas items for sale that would be nice. It doesn't have to be a tree topper. Just look for something you would like at the top of your tree and see if you can adapt if for your use. Are you going for a theme? Not much help, I know, but someone else will probably come up with just the right idea for you.

I don't really have a theme, other than the red/gold color. I'm just having a terrible time finding photos or inspiration for something different! TIA!

Here's a link to Karen's inspiration album. If you haven't seen it yet be sure to check it out. You may find just the thing you're looking for.

I was just at Hobby Lobby yesterday afternoon and they have many, many different tree topper stars in all sizes, including ones large enough for your tree. I'd go with a star, myself.

Well, went to Hobby Lobby, AGAIN and this time I came out with something for the top of my tree! I'd post a pic, but frankly, I'm too pooped to bother. I got 3 extra large berry/greenery picks (some of the fancier better quality they have there) and some sparkly red curly vines (a little las vegas-y, but not too bad!) Came home and wired them together and will make a huge bow to go at the bottom or I might buy a large star if I can find one to match. The arrangement is quite large and I think will be just right.

Funny how I can look and look and never decide and then one day just go buy something and it's fine! I'm terribly indecisive, I guess! And Hobby Lobby sends me into a total decision paralysis. Just too many things to choose from!

I've used everything imagineable as tree toppers
I've had the bows in the earlier years,
but now it's always a contest to figure out
what's going on the top of the tree.
Last year a pair of ice skates.
    A birdhouse the year before.
A cat -stuffed annimal - curled around
the top about 10 years ago.
I'm still contiplating for this year.
Since my colors are brown and blue this year.
I sure wish we had a Hobby Lobby down here.........cheryl

I was going to suggest making an unusual tree topper. With the red & gold-you mentioned you were using white snowflakes? You could buy one of the larger styrofoam balls & also a couple packages of the thin wooden skewers from the grocery store (the kind with one pointed end?)
Place a 1/4" dowel long enough to pokeinto the bottom of your ball halfway & enough to secure to your tree's top. Then cover the ball with the skewers, not leaving too mch space inbetween. Spray the entire thing with the white snow & immediately sprinkle on iridescent glitter-heavily. When dry-on the flat tips of each skewer..glue a faceted crystal bead..to tie in w/your hanging crystals. Work? I know.. but it might look pretty darn cool!

Okay, sharon- you ROCK!!!! That sounds just like something I might do if I have the energy! I think I have most of that stuff already and just bought more snowflakes! Maybe I'll try it this weekend- I think I'll have some time to mess with it!

Yacheryl- what awesome ideas! Reminds me of the designer trees you see in the boutiques!
