GE refrigerators

Does anyone have any experience with new GE 21 cu ft. refrigererators with the freezer on top. There are 4 models, but they are all basically the same. The model numbers are GTH21KBXWW, GTH21KCXWW, GTS21KBXWW, and GTS21KCXWW. I like these a lot, but consumer reports gave them a "poor" rating on temperature performance. Also, the only two reviews on best buy says they don't cool. I wonder if the compressor is bad on them.

Also, does anyone have experience with the Whirlpool W1TXNMFWQ or W1TXEMMWQ? In these models, there is only one thermostat controling both the freezer and the refrigerator. Is this OK?

I have the 18 cu ft model that is similar. It cools fine, maybe a little too cool in fact. It is noisier than I would like!

How interesting to see this today! My 5 or 6-year-old g e has conked out after I spent $500 trying to fix it, to no avail. I would NOT recommend a g e for anything, though at this point I don't know what to buy that will last as they all are cut from the same cloth now. My problem was the freezer stopped working, and when a new circuit board was installed the fridge stopped working and we haven't been able to get it going again after replacing several parts. And this morning we find the freezer not working. What a racket these appliance makers have going!

You've probably already made your choice, since it's been five months, but I just joined this forum. We are about to replace our 2-1/2 year old refrigerator of this exact same model (the model number is slightly different because ours is stainless steel, but it's the same fridge). Ours was the energy star rated one without an ice maker (which we didn't want because we thought that would just be one more thing to go wrong). We have had nothing but trouble with this refrigerator starting with very inconsistent temperatures in both the freezer and refrigerator. Our food in the refrigerator would freeze every couple of weeks (mostly food on the bottom shelves and vegetable crisper drawers, but it happened everywhere from time to time) . We had to throw out a lot of food in 2-1/2 years. The freezer would sometimes melt food and sometimes over freeze it. And ice would always form on the walls and ceiling of the freezer. These problems happened no matter how we adjusted the temperature dials, which I think are pretty useless on this model. After dozens of service calls where they did everything from replacing doors and gaskets to replacing the thermostat and sealing the fridge with silicone, the problem still exists. Also, we discovered that the light in the fridge wouldn't shut off when the door was closed (because we had to replace the light bulb twice). The door wasn't hitting the mechanism to shut the light off (I tested it by putting in my iPhone on movie mode, btw, to see if the light stayed on while the door was closed). So, until we get a new fridge, I rigged up something to help the door hit the light mechanism. We did have an extended warranty, so the company sent us a check and said to go buy a new fridge and our warranty is now void. They should have done that much earlier, they would have saved a lot of money on service calls. Also, one of the GE repair technicians who came out, who has worked as a repair tech with GE for 20 years, said that this particular fridge was a terrible design and that's why the temperature was always inconsistent. He just kept saying how terrible the design was. He replaced the thermostat anyway, but that didn't help at all. It's possible that we just got a lemon, but I can't recommend this fridge based on its cooling and freezing operation.

On the plus side, though, the interior is very roomy, has a great layout, and is very easy to keep clean. The freezer compartment is also a really nice big size. Plus the exterior has a nice sleek design. It's also pretty quiet. Just the usual humming and cycling noises that aren't particularly loud or annoying.
