stair design

Does anyone know a good resource for stair design or construction?

We are planning an open wood stair sometimes called a return stair or switchback stair. You go up halfway and then turn 180 degrees on a platform and go up the rest of the way.

We like the style of stair we have now with open planks and post and beam construction.

I'd like to see some examples of this kind of design in the shape we're planning for or anything else open and rustic :)

Oh, try to ignore the boy and the Easter gifts in the picture! LOL

Our stairs are similar to what you are looking for. We wanted them open however, we ended up with the wall. We had a huge stair issue at the beginning of our build. Living with the wall was a compromise.
I do not have a recent photo. They just finished stairs last weekend. They look wonderful! I will try to get a better photo tomorrow. Hope you find what you need.

The present codes in some areas will require some sort of protection (balusters, etc.) in the open areas under the handrails for heights greater than 30 inches.

Thanks dragon fly. That is the shape we want. I don't think the wall will work for us because the plan is open all around the stairs. I think it will be something like this in shape but this is not the style we want at all:

Bus driver, you're right and the open railings don't pass code here so we'll have to do something different than last time although we really like the open look and have been happy with it for years.

Thew Stairways Manufacturing Association has some very good PDFs showing the various code interpretations. Since we don't know the exact code you fall under I'm providing a general link (look in the yellow box on the right of the page). If you look at Photo 17 on Page 7 of the 2003 IRC version you can see how you can treat an open stair and still pass code.

Thanks klabio, We're in Nova Scotia, Canada. We're pretty sure what the code requires now.

I was hoping to find a picture exactly what I wanted lol but no luck. It looks like we will have to use several pictures and design from what we like of each example.

I've been google imaging for days! LOL It's been the best option so far. I'm starting to think there just aren't many good stair sites out there that show what we're looking for.

Ask around for an experienced, reputable carpenter who has many years experience with stair building and get their take on it.Stair cutters like roof cutters are rare these days, especially with so many pre fabricated elements, but still around if you seek them out.
