Table conundrum

I have a conundrum regarding my dining table. My kitchen is not an eat-in kitchen. Other than the dining table, the only other tables available would be coffee tables which aren't any good for properly eating a meal. My dining table seats 6 with a fair bit of elbow room. It has a leaf that can make it seat 8. I often have company, so this is quite useful. However, my family is only 4 strong.

I'm looking for suggestions for how to decorate and seat this large table for only 4 people, or even a romantic dinner for 2. How can I cozy us all up when we have two to three times as much space as we need?

Thanks!

    Hi duckie,
I have a table similar to yours in my DR.
I have 6 chairs, but put only 4 around the table and the other 2 I have off to the side in the room.
If you have enough room to sit 2 across from 2, I would do that, and use the ends for various decorative or serving pieces. Same thing for 2, set up the table across from one another, and use the sides in the same manner. I do this with another table that DH & I sit at every day...it sits up to 8.
It's a table that's in an eating area between the kitchen and family room. When we're sitting there, I put the 'centerpiece' off center, to the side of us..and use the other side to put serving pieces for our food.
This seems to work nicely and gives us a more 'intimate' feeling.
    Hope this helps.

Duckie, I bet if you posted this on the Home Decorating forum you'd get a lot of suggestions. The link is below in case you don't have it.

I wish my house was big enough for an eat in kitchen, the way they did it with the old Farm Kitchens back in the day. Not a Breakfast Nook mind you, but actually part of the kitchen.

My diningroom table is the same, no eat in kitchen & I always put all the decor in the center, but for two I would do decor on the ends as suggested. I actually posted a pic at Thanksgiving time of one just that way. I'll see if I can find it.

The previous pages here don't go back that far, seems it is gone forever.

I have a fairly large round table too. I find making a table cozy depends on not only the table, but the surroundings (curtains, art work, color of wall, is there nice music playing, basically I like to set the stage for all of the senses (sight, sound, smell). When I do a table, my style tends to be more is more. The abundance of layering helps with the cozyness, it fills in the voids left by the large empty spaces. Candles always make an area feel cozy, I almost always use them in my tablescapes. I like putting people near each other, that makes a difference too, and again in the blank areas left on the table I will either do a nicely arranged display of the food, or some decorative object/objects that I use from different parts of my house. And of course, don't forget flowers, real if you can afford them, or nice silks.
