Gaggenau grill

Hi,

Has anyone used the Gaggenau indoor grill? Is it really much better than a portable indoor grill? How does it compare to an outdoor gas bbq in terms of food taste? Can anyone recommend a good portable indoor grill that comes close to the taste of food cooked on a gas bbq and is not an enormous chore to clean. Ideally we would prefer a portable indoor grill rather than the Gaggenau unit as space under the vent is tight to add a grill as well (not to mention the high price of the Gagg units). However, we are not sure as winters are long around here and we do miss barbequeing.

Not familiar with The Gaggenau unit, but I would look for one that has an infra red grill, (Like The Blue Star and The Capital Cullinarian have).

My BBq has infra red as well as the conventional gas grill, but everything come out SOOOO much better using the infrared.

If I lived in Ontario, (been there many times--Lovely place) I would build myself a BBQ room as we use it that much, but fortunately I live in Southern Calif (Nuff Said)!!

    Good luck on your hunt!!!

    Hi dodge59!

Thanks for your reply. Yes Ontario is lovely -- less so in the winter. I forgot to clarify that our stove top will be induction - no plans for any gas range. We will have a wall oven too. The grill we want would need to be an electric powered item either a slip in unit like the Gaggenau grill or even a separate portable appliance as in a plug in electric table top grill (that we could place under our hood for ventilation). When you wrote about infrared does this apply solely to gas ranges as in examples you provided? Thanks.

If you're looking for something portable that still provides the taste of an outdoor barbeque, I can recommend the Minden indoor grill. I bought mine directly from Minden about a year ago and I love it. I think it was around a hundred dollars.

Keep in mind that you will need a powerful vent hood like with any indoor grill as it does create a lot of smoke. But that's what gives food that outdoor grill flavor.

I've included a link to an infomercial about the grill but you can purchase from several online vendors.

Hi markb! Thanks so much for the recommendation. It looks great; and we will put it under the hood vent for sure! Thanks!

Here's an article on Infrared broilers, both gas and Electric, "O M".
Yep they makes electric too. No reason why they couldn't, as it is the ceramic that gives off the heat so whether you heat it with gas or electric, "No Biggie".

Yes You are right about Ontario in the Winter, Been there , done that several times, but it's not near as bad as Edmunton Alberta, or that other city they calls "End of the Earth" in Alberta (Ft McMurray), was -40 last time I was there.
    C or F degrees? Doesn't matter -40C = -40 F (Freaking Cold).

Hope the article helps and you will see why I'm such a fan of Infrared, be is gas or electric.

If you want to go ahead with the gaggenau grill, you might find something on craigslist or ebay. There is a posting in my area for about 500 bucks

    Hi Gary and Lalitha,

Thanks for your help. After briefly looking up options using infrared grilling, I noticed the Gaggenau OVENS offer infrared grilling (probably like a broil feature). I was trying to keep the cost down as we are already getting an induction cooktop. However, maybe there are other wall ovens that offer a type of infrared broiling feature. Overall, it would fit in better with our space to either get a grill feature inside the wall oven, or use a cheaper portable grill, that can be placed under the hood over the cooktop. To allocate permanent space under the hood for a counter grill will be a challenge.

Thanks, Lalitha for reminding me to not overlook craiglist of ebay to trim some costs.

    I appreciate all your suggestions.

    Carol,

I have to admit that I don't really care how it does it--I can't find any reference to IR in any Gaggenau materials--but I do use the broiler on my Gaggenau oven, and am very happy with the result. Rather than a standard broiler pan, I tend to use a cast iron grill plate. I have a small, thin Le Creuset one, with close, small ridges, that's great for things like lamb chops. I also have a double sized one with deep, wide ridges, which is great for larger things and skewers (though also fine for lambchops--just overkill). It's an electricity suck to heat up the cast iron, but I love the grill marks and how evenly the meat cooks. :) I don't have an outdoor grill. You can grill vegetables easily on the stove top with a grill pan. I haven't done meats, but people do that too.

Thanks plllog -- your ideas are very helpful! I love the way the pan leaves grill marks -- I bet that is the way many restaurants grill their food (i.e. not on a real bbq).
