Kitchen Prelim Plans

I'm posting the plans for our kitchen. I know a lot of people said we don't have enough cabinets...but adding a lot of cabinets = $$$. The kitchen is custom cabinets, so they would have to make the extra ones. We plan on putting a shallow pantry on the wall with nothing on it. The images are little uneven...they came from a fax.

We went with this color combo:

Although, our kitchen isn't this big and obviously laid out differently. The cabinets will be black cherry and countertops almost the same shade as this photo (laminate though!). Our handles are almost identical and all SS appliances.

Things we're changing: chopping 1.5 ft off the island (it's currently 5.5 ft) and moving it in slightly, extending the cabinet around the fridge to cover all of the sides (no fridge sticking out!) and of course the pantry addition.

Anything else look weird to anyone?

Love your color choices! This island presents a great opportunity for storage space, especially since there is no range or sink in it. Maybe you could put some drawers in the island, to store things like Tupperware or tablecloths, towels, etc. I only have three drawers in my current kitchen, and I find that it isn't enough. Your idea for a shallow pantry will be helpful, especially for boxed or canned goods. The corner cabinet also offers a lot of space for pantry items. Do you have a place for your wastebasket/recycleables? Some builders stagger cabinet heights to add visual interest.

I'm sure you'll love your new kitchen. You can't go wrong with the choices you've made. We are using zodiaq for our island countertop only, to save $$$. And our other cabinets will have a laminate top, but there are lots of great laminate choices out there. Post pictures when you're done, okay?

I agree on the island presenting a wonderful opportunity for nearby storage. I know it costs more (we're doing it) but do consider doing all drawers in the side of the island that faces the sink. (do a search on the kitchen site about the drawers) They give you SO much more usable storage for the $$ than cabinets do.

I'm not sure what stage your construction is at, but if you are able to - you might think about building a recess behind your refrigerator. That way the refrigerator will look built in and the front edge will be in line with your counter depth. If that is not possible then the deeper cabinet panels are a good option too.
It looks like you have made a good use of space in your kitchen. The layout is almost identical to what I have now. However, my kitchen has the refrigerator on the wall 'behind' the island-I think yours will be more functional. Great color scheme-Can't wait to see pictures of yours!

i love the look of the cabinets. you should stop on by the kitchens forum. but a warning: their a bunch of true officianados over there! not for the faint of heart, but you'll get some brilliant ideas. i'm wondering about the size of the island... how deep will it be? also, the microwave above the range kills a lot of storage space. if you housed it inside your island you'd gain lots more. just a thought. see you over at kitchens?
