Need Advice - which mirror square or rectangle?

Which mirror looks better over this vanity? The 36 x 36 square or the rectangle? The square is a close match to the wood on the vanity. (Disregard the white corner protectors that are still on the square mirror) The rectangle mirror has some bronze on it that looks good with the brushed bronze faucet. The ceiling is a standard 8 foot ceiling. What is your opinion? Square or rectangle - or neither?

Thanks!

I love the rectangular mirror. It brings more elegance and glamour to the room, and not as clunky. The bronze on it is very nice.

    The rectangle looks much nicer.

Another vote for the rectangle. As someone else with standard 8' ceilings, I can tell you that I'm usally looking ways to add vertical to my rooms. I think that the square mirror looks a bit heavy over your vanity and almost matches it too well whereas the rectangle mirror manages to compliment your vanity, particulary the faucet, while still drawing the eyes upward toward what is probably a really pretty light above.

*particularly (Sorry, I hate it when I misspell my words! lol)

Well I was all set to say rectangle then I saw the pics and I like the square better. I think it's because the space for the vanity is so wide it helps with size & proportion better than the rectangle. Now if you had a rectangle that was wider (then it would have to be a little longer too), that might help. Note: It would have to sit closer to the sink splash. The size you have right now looks too skinny for the space. Just my $0.02.

The square came 1st and looked great to me! After seeing the rectangular I let it all sink in and still like the square best. I like the way it fills the space and matches to cabinets.

I like the square best. It fills the space and is less predictable than the rectangle. The rectangle finish doesn't seem to relate to anything else that I can see.

The square one. It fits the space and goes with the cabinet. The rectangular one, while pretty, doesn't fit the style of the cabinet and is lost on the wall.

I like the proportions of the rectangular mirror.

I vote square. What is the vanity (source?). It's really nice.

I also like the square mirror.

The square one! To me, the style seems more in keeping with the vanity.

i like the square mirror MUCH better!!

Wow - thanks for the posts!!! So far the square mirror is winning 8 to 4 votes. I would have thought most people would have thought the rectangle mirror was better. So this is very interesting. Hope to hear from a few more people, as this is great feedback to get :)

Sue B the vanity is by Kohler and is called "Ballard". It is a 42 inch wide vanity. I absolutely love the cast iron one piece sink that we got to go on top of it. It is also by Kohler and is from their "iron impressions" line. The color is cane sugar.

hehehe... It seems I hold a minority opinion! That doesn't surprise me... I think that's why I lurk in the Home Decorating forum to learn from the knowledgable design people there. lol

If you haven't already, why not x-post in that forum and see what kind of advice you get?

The style and scale of the square is much better. It complements the vanity well. I don't like the rectangle at all. It's predictable and competes with the vanity with the dark edge and metallic finish.

i saw that kohler vanity top in a showroom and LOVED it... but, our vanity is large... because i really liked the vanity top and because we got a cast iron shower pan, i ended up getting kohler's cast iron demi lav sinks and love them!!
    your entire vanity looks great!

I think the rectangular shape is much better but I don't think the mirror itself goes with the vanity at all. Is there another rectangular mirror you can find? If not, then I would go with the square because in my opinion, the better scale is less important than complementary materials and finishes.

Busybee3 : How do you like that cast iron shower pan? I am seriously considering putting one of those receptors in our master bath. We are thinking about converting our tub/shower to a shower only. But I am sooo afraid of shower pan failure down the road. That and the fact that the average life of a conventional shower pan is about 10-15 years. I thought if I went with one of those Kohler cast iron shower pans, I would be set for life! At least with the shower pan not leaking :) How do you like yours? Any photos that you can post would be greatly appreciated.

nycbluedevil: Hadn't found another rectangular mirror that I liked, but that is a thought. Maybe it is the material and not the shape... I guess the wood frame on the square looks better with the cabinet. Just wasn't sure if it was to matchy-matchy or not.

I did look on Kohler's website today and found the mirror that they sell for this Ballard vanity. It is a rectangle but in the same finish as the vanity. Maybe that means that is the best shape for the cabinet? Or maybe not. I hate all this decorating stuff!!! It can be seen here at this kohler link:

turn the rectangle sideways and it creates a general shape that copies the general outline of the furniture piece below.

do this and see what it looks like.

other factors come into play. A frame of the type that is shown on the square mirror is a closer match to the furniture. The rectangular mirror has a frame that is more distant than close-match. For this reason it competesmore than the square. And also for the other reason (of the general outline).

If you or some helpful person re-post the square but photoshopped to become a rectangle, you will get more reactions. Take these images to another forum and start again.

I like the square. makes the vanity look more substantial.

Square would be my choice. This mirror makes the room (niche) look much wider and brighter. The frame lets the vanity wood seem warm

(and the rectangular makes the space narrow and the vanity wood seems yellowish and dated).

    Square.

I also vote for square. I'm not a matchy-match person, but as another poster stated, that rectangular one doesn't relate at all. I find the metallic finish too unrelated to the more simplified shaker-style vanity. I also like the idea of turning the rectangular one on its side to see if those proportions work better, but you'd still need to choose another style frame.

Bring home a bunch more and see what happens -- you can always return them (what else will you have to do once the bathroom is finished?)

Another vote for square. It seems to fill the space better. I'm also not a fan of the color of the rectangular one which maybe clouding my judgement.

    Love the vanity!

i really like the shower pan... it's 36x60 and we have a 15" deep bench along 60" side, so total shower size is ~51x60. i love not having the tile floor grout lines and the floor-tile wall grout line...
the anti-slip stripes do get dirty and aren't the easiest to clean- i've used a magic eraser with best results at this point...haven't tried alot of different products yet though...(our walls are marble tile, so i haven't tried alot of stronger chemicals in there on the pan yet...-we've been using our shower for about a year)
sorry-i haven't posted any pics of my bathroom...i've seen directions written here on how to post pics--maybe i will give it a try in next day or 2!
