Help with awkward bathroom!

I love my new apartment. It's a large 1-bedroom with two walk-in closets, a linen closet, and a hall/coat closet. Storage galore! Right? Not in the bathroom. My bathroom is horribly awkward. I can barely fit a trash can in there. I need ideas for economical storage solutions for the items I want readily available. The vanity is so small, I'd prefer to keep a minimum of things on it (also makes cleaning less of a hassle). I want to be able to grab lotion, face wash, BF's shaving stuff, etc. without too much digging. Keeping things under the sink doesn't work for me. I would prefer mostly open (not 100%) storage just to keep the place from seeming even smaller. I do need at least some concealed storage because deodorant, toothpaste, etc. is ugly to me, but I can keep things like tweezers and Q-tips in "pretty" containers. The "linen closet" is directly across the hall from the bathroom, so many items that see less frequent use can hang out in there.

No comments on the lack of color, please. :) I am a reformed slob and the white shows everything, inspiring me to clean. I am definitely not a "white" person, but it forces me to keep the bathroom very clean. The lighting is also very harsh, but I'm currently hunting for a bulb that will fit in the 250v ceiling socket and provide softer lighting (everything I've found locally seems to be either heat lamps or flood lamps - the bulb in the bathroom when we moved in literally burned the tops of our heads!). The ugly vanity lighting has to stay, though.

Here it is from the doorway (it's too small to take decent pictures of the "whole thing" inside). My trash can is sandwiched between the tub and the toilet. You can see the huge mirror that takes up a ton of wall space, otherwise, I could use the space over the toilet for something:

This is what drives me the most crazy. The towel bar is directly over the toilet paper holder, so you have to move towels aside to access the toilet paper. I bought an over the door towel rack and have resigned myself to just keeping hand towels on the bar. I would have preferred to just remove the towel bar and put up towel hooks, but the towel bar is affixed to the tile. I can spackle some holes, but I am not messing with the tile:

This is the space above the sink, next to the door:

I am trying to figure out something that isn't too deep, so I'm not constantly whacking my head on it while I brush my teeth or banging into it while exiting the shower. I need something, but can't decide if I need two wall-mounted somethingorothers or if one will suffice. I'm finding lots of storage options, but most of them seem like they might be too deep.

Any suggestions?

Why didn't they just put the tp holder on the vanity? Who wants to reach way ahead for tp anyways?

Ok, so first of all when you say apartment is this a rental or do you own it?

If you own it, I would get rid of the towel bar and tp holder. The tile looks like a standard white and if you have to break a few tiles to get rid of them you should be able to replace them pretty easily. Then you can put tp holder on the vanity.

Then you could put a towel rack or hooks (my preference) on the drywall above the tile. Above that you could put a shallow depth medicine cab or other shelving unit. Again, if you own it you could sink the cab in between the studs by cutting out the drywall.

If it's a rental, you are kind of stuck with whats there. I would use the towel bar for big towels and just ignore the ceramic tp holder and put another one on the vanity. I'd look for shallow depth shelves or cabs to go above the tile behind the door. You can get a neat little thing at places like HD that slide onto the door hinge that will stop the door before it hits the shelves. I would just do open shelves and then have rows of nice baskets to put your ugly stuff in - just mount the shelves high enough that you aren't going to be able to look into the baskets.

If you use the ceramic towel rack, then you could get rid of the over the door towel hooks and buy an over the door canvas shoe holder and use that to store things like hairbrushes, razors, shaving cream etc. The one we have is white so it would fit right in with your colour scheme (which I really like BTW).

Do you have any room behind the door? or is the door frame almost flush with that wall? Our bathroom is almost identical to yours but we have about 10 inches behind the door. We had a cabinet built for that area and it is amazing how much it holds. Like you we are stuck with the trash between either the vanity and toilet or the tub and toilet.

    Hope this helps.

I totally agree with budge - great ideas! You could also put some sort of shallow shelves on the wall with the light switch - I realize it might make the vanity area seem even more claustrophobic but the lack of storage space is really out of control! I just bought a 6" deep glass shelf for my bath, and I saw several while I was shopping around that were only about 4" deep. Have a look at Home Depot and Lowe's - they have a ton of glass shelves in different sizes, and if you don't see anything there that suits you, try online.

Replace the giant mirror with a nice framed one over the sink, put a standard wall cab over the toilet.

    Cheap, easy, super useful.
