One of my questions here, is, "Do you think it is a good idea to give up one closet, in exchange for a much larger walk in closet, and since that closet faces an exterior wall, I can also put a window in it" We're not concerned too much about resale value, as we're gonna stay here till they "Cart us off to the Ol Folks' Home!!
We watch a lotta HGTV and, at least there, they all want a walk in closet.

I think the closet-swapping idea will be fine, and will make the area seem less choppy.

I would be wary about putting a window in a tub/shower as it provides an potential water access point into the wall. Are you talking about putting the window in the long wall, then have the shower fixture on the upper wall and the fireplace on the lower wall? I'm not clear on how the tub will be able to see/use the fireplace, as you'll need a wall between them.

The Window would be the top right layout that you drew(one end of the tub)It will be a very high window and the roof outside hangs at least 3 feet over the opening for the proposed window, you can , just barely make out the roof overhang in the second picture I posted, so I dont anticipate any potential water access points there--in fact the large window you can just barely make out will be changed to a window that opens--this will provide great West-East ventillation for both the bedroom and bath.
The fireplace will go where you drew it, but it will be a 2 sided (see thru) fireplace. The double wall there is 24 inches deep which should accomodate the fireplace it can be deepened, if necessary. So one side of the fireplace will show in the master bedroom while the other side will show from the tub.
I agree with you about the "less choppy look" and I think after 35 years the wife deserves a better view than just the "Water Closet"

Regarding the walk-in closet, if this is your final home, do whatever works for you. Walk-in closets give a nice feel, but often are not a very effective use of square footage. So go with what you need. If you don't need a big closet, perhaps you have a better use for that space.

I would not put two doors and a window in your walk-in closet. It will take away most of the storage space. Pick one location for the door (I would choose to put it facing the fireplace if possible - gives more wall space in both bedroom and bath). And see if you can fit in a pocket door to avoid door swing issues.

Also, although having the natural light in your closet is a good idea, in a space your proposed size it will really cut your hanging/shelf space, as well. Maybe a high, linear window so that you could still have storage below it?

Do you actual dimensions of your spaces (both current and porposed) that you couls share? That would help.

thanks Sandy, The bathroom is 10ft x 9ft or 12ft x 9 feet if we include the closet I intend to remove and install tub there. Thanks for the input on the windows and the doors. There is the window by the currently located tub. It is a double window, I could change it to a single window and install the new wall, and perhaps a glass-mirror sliding door on the other side of that window, that will allow the closet to be even bigger with natural light.
I suspect wife would like a full length mirror, so she can check "everything"--ya know, dress hanging right, no wrinkles etc etc(whatever women do in front of full length mirrors)!!! The area that is left I could use to enclose the water closet---seems folks on HGTV like those, will probably havta move the other half of the window(or add new one so there is a window in the water closet area---maybe use pocket door, per your suggestion to close off water closet

PS, I'm really surprised no body mentioned my "Elegant Floor" (LOL), I ripped out the carpeting, but still have to remove the tack strips and glue , here and there.

Is this project a surprise for her? If not, why don't you ask her what she'd like? She might have some good ideas since she's been looking at this bath for so long.

One thing I think I'd want to do is bring the floor down so you don't have a step up, if that's possible.

I agree with Sandy. Your larger closet doesn't seem like it will actually give you any more space once you put the window and two doors in.

No this is not a "surprise" for the wife. Right now I am getting ideas, and a lot of help from you folks too. She had thought about moving that tub to that spare closet too.
Of course I will ask her about door and windows too, I do like the idea of one door and we could forego the window--She does have a lotta clothes and in fact She uses the closet in one of the spare bedrooms for "Overfill" now, LOL.
I designed our kitchen (which She loves), alto of course I got her inputs and ran the "Final Design" by Her too, before we proceeded, and we chose the granite and cabinets appliances etc etc together.
So right now, with your help, I am trying to figure out what is feasable and what is not.Wife works, so I appreciate your help will be less for Her to hafta do, once we works out the bugs and kinks in the bathroom design.

alabamanicole "One thing I think I'd want to do is bring the floor down so you don't have a step up, if that's possible." Ya know, that is a GREAT idea!!!! Most likely we will be installing a ceramic tile floor---bedroom will be red oak hardwood, like the rest of the house.
I wouldn't want one of us to trip on that step up in 10 years or so (or even now) and come crashing down on that tile.
You folks are fulla great ideas, No one, (even me)((LOL)), can think of everything!!!

My contractor will be here tomorrow, Thursday Sept 10th to quote on some of the ideas you folks and I had. I have a tenant who is also a building contractor and He will be here too(Hopefully not at the same time) (LOL).Anyway, you can see that I have plenty of "talent" available to incorporate some of your ideas in the design. My tenant's wife lost her job, so I cut the rent, (temporairly), to help them out, In return, He has promised to do some work for me----ya can't beat that price?
Anyway, if any of you have anymore "Creative Ideas" please feel free to post. This is by NO Way, the final design---but we are gettin there

Dodge, here is your current plan idea drawn up to scale using Plan3D software. This is using a standard tub size, a 60" vanity and utilizing a tub-size portion of the bathroom (and it's adjacent equal portion of bedroom) for the closet.

You have a nice sized space to work with.

Thanks for the plan, I do like the location of the closet door thanks for the help on that!!! Closet will still be easily accessible from either room, and we can use full lenth glass (Mirror)--sliding door there. We will forgo the extra door and window in closet per suggestions made here.
The current closet is well lit with xenon lamps anyway.

I have one more question, the bathroom will appear smaller if we enclose the toilet. Watching HGTV seems like most want the toilet closed off--but-- I consider you folks more experts than them. It hasn't been a big deal in the 35 years we have been here, and there is another bathroom right next to this one---sooooo------what sayest ya'all?

I really, really have missed my private toilet closet since we moved into this house. For us, it basically prevents one of us from getting ready while the other is on the toilet. Individuals have varying degrees of modesty though, so I can only speak for myself.

You really do have the space to put one in so I would do it. Again, use a pocket door if you can...maybe even one with frosted glass.

Here is your plan with one included. Also, I extended your tub deck so that your fireplace could be raised up to tub-eye level (saw that in a picture recently and it was pretty cool).

Thanks, busy be me. Yes the fireplace will be elevated, and I think I will open the area above the fireplace. Im planning on putting a large lcd tv in one of the upper corners of the bedroom, with the area over the fireplace open, will be easier to see the TV from the bathroom and I can locate it either on the NW or SW top corners of the bedroom. Without the opening, TV would hafta be in NW corner which would limit bed placement, etc. I designed an entertainment center in the family room with a 52 inch TV in one side and a gas fireplace at the other--both at "Eye Level"----that saved us from putting a TV in the kitchen as, (even at our ages), we can clearly see the large screen TV as we putter around the kitchen----so it should work in the bath too---Ya Thinks?
Wife still deciding on whether to close off toilet or not. As I mention there is another full bath right next to this one--so per suggestions here, Wife will "Call that shot" LOL
The vanities that you drew are now in a straight line as you drew them. Most likely I will curve each one at the end--ya know, like a 45 degree angle but curved instead, Contractor said really no difference in price for a curved one versus one at 45--and I like curves. Our kitchen is curved, even including some of the cabinet doors.

Thanks for your input on the window. I may have misunderstood you, as I thought you meant outside water--((whatta they call that--oh yes, rain, (rare here) )) could cause a problem. Maybe you were trying to say that the "inside shower head might splash behind window and get behind tile or whatever is on wall around the bath"?
Anyway if that was your concern, there will not be a shower head--never use it--there is one in the bath next door to this one and a full sized shower with a Solatube in it,in the downstairs bath, should we get in a "Shower mood"
The window will be VERY high over the tub, --- It hasta be cause the garage roof, which peaks, is there, but if you or any folks have any suggestions on sealing around that window, or the walls surrounding the tub, I would be more than anxious to hear them.
Right now I am leaning towards, Onyx,Marble or granite strips (Long and wide) as I want to have as little grout as possible--in fact if they can do it without grout (as they did the onyx surround around the fire place in family room, so much the better.
Anyway thanks for trying to help and sorry if I misunderstoop ya, Us "Oldies but goodies" tend to have, "Our Senior Moments" LOL

Light bulb: your tub is going to be a tub, not a tub/shower. That helps a lot. I was trying to figure out how you'd be able to utilize a fireplace if there was a shower wall between the tub and fireplace. Just a tub...now it works.
