Presenting: Our house

Sorry I haven't posted much, but it's been a busy summer with all sorts of stuff going on. But yes, I'm finally posting pics, four months after moving in.

I am very slow at unpacking and I had to take even these pics around some of the remaining boxes. I haven't put up any of our artwork or decorative items yet. And DH still has his archie bunker recliner in the family room, although that is headed for the basement as soon as his new one arrives.

The little things left to do are putting the stone up on the fireplace front and doing the mantel and hearth, which DH will do this fall/winter. And I need to seal the backsplash we did in the kitchen and get travertine outlet covers so that everything coordinates. Oh, and we need shoe mold in the kitchen and master bath.

We also need to landscape and get our grass to grow. This summer has been so incredibly hot and dry that grass seed won't sprout and we haven't landscaped because everything would die. May was a super dry month with lots of heat and little rain and we didn't want to risk planting stuff in June or July. The only things in are our 16-tree orchard and other trees we planted back in April.

But hey, all things considered, it feels pretty much done and the rest is just icing on the cake.

Here's our home:

Looks awesome Kygirl, love the colors! The windows in the breakfast nook adds so much light it looks very refreshing. Lovely home~
    Thanks for sharing!

I too am LOVING the colors, Kygirl! Your new home is absolutely beautiful. Your kitchen is one of my all time fav's...... it's very rich and regal, but still looks like a functional kitchen you could spend hours playing in.

Great job on all of your choices. It flows together so nicely. I'm so glad you shared..... it's a treat to see your new home now that you're in it.

Yep, we've missed you around here. Like Allison said.... don't be a stranger. :o)

Absolutely breathtaking. I love it all. What wood and stain did you use in your master bath?

    Thank you for sharing.

thanks, everyone, for all the kind comments.

I kept wanting to wait until I had the "perfect" photos taken from just the right angle to best display the house but I finally realized that I'm just not going to get that done anytime soon. I thought you guys would rather see a few photos taken badly than none at all. :)

trudymom - the bathroom cabinets are from Haas, which is a cabinetmaker based in sellersburg, indiana. the color is Honey and they have an ebony glaze. that's the only wood in the master bath (well, other than the trim. were you referring to the trim?)

fishpants, I do love my butcherblock. I'm currently in the process of putting on multiple coats of tung oil (I'm on coat five right now, will do 6-8 depending on how it looks/feels/level of water resistance.) it takes a few days to dry in between coats so it takes a while to do all of them but I love the look and warmth of the butcherblock.

    Very nice! Excellent color choices.

Please share more details - wood floor species, light fixture in dining room.

    Congrats on your new home!

jgirl, the light fixture is the Oliver Linear Chandelier from Pottery Barn. I bought it on sale last fall, so I don't think they offer it anymore. Although I have seen it offered on Ebay from some sellers at great discounts.

Our floors are red oak with Provencial stain from minwax.

    thanks for the compliments.

kygirl it is great to see your pics and hear from you. Your house is beautiful and I know that you guys are really enjoying it. I'm gonna warn you that our houses have a LOT in common- not that I copied you or anything. Well-one confession-I loved your kitchen so there might have been just a teeny weeny bit of copying with your cabs-I think I asked your ok on that didn't I? But I never saw the tile in your bath and ours is almost identical!

Here's believing that you have many wonderful years ahead to enjoy and love in that place. Thanks for the pics and now I'm sniffling!

    Absolulty beutiful !

Love the colors, the iron railing on the stairs, the white island in the kitchen and the door jam trim.

    Very, very nice!

Beautiful home!!!! You have very similar decorating taste as my hubby and I. I will have to save these pictures as inspiration. We moved into our new home in March but we don't have the money for new stuff so it might take a few years to get it looking the way I envision.

I love your tile back-splash. Do you mind sharing the name of the tile and do you have any close up pictures? The one thing in our house that didn't turn out is the back-splash and we've decided to replace it next spring so I am gathering ideas. Should of spent more time doing that in the first place:)

Hope after all the troubles you went through you feel it was worth it in the end. Isn't that the way most things in life are? Good luck and keep us updated.

Oh that is sooooo pretty! You truly have picked great colors,,,Did you do all on your own or have help on the color scheme? We are just now getting ready to start our house so I'm getting very excited! How long did it take you to build?

*There* you are, KYgirl! I've been wondering where you were hiding!

I'm so envious of your grass! Even though you don't think it's nice, it's much better than our barren land, LOL!

Your home is lovely. I hope you have many happy years there! (How are the boys liking their new home?!)

Beautiful house, thanks for sharing it with us.

Oh how did I miss this last night!! Beautiful Kygirl!! How proud you must feel and yes you should feel very! Thanks for sharing your pictures. They give me hope!

Many blessings to you and yours for many happy memories! Enjoy!

Very nicely done! Love the kitchen and the color choices. Best wishes and enjoy your new home!

thanks, everyone! and hoosiergirl, that isn't grass! up close, it's a bunch of green weeds. I swear. funny how weeds will grow but grass seed won't.

alymarie, I am going to seal my backsplash and I'll post close-ups of it. it's simply some tile we found at lowe's. it's tumbled marble according to the box, which I guess is the same as tumbled travertine since it looks exactly the same. we also bought the mosiac tile and trim there as well. it's in stock stuff at lowe's, not even a special order. the color is Noce. and as for new furniture, I hear you on that! we only bought the two new leather couches, flat-screen TV, DH's leather recliner and the dining room table and chairs. and that still set us back right at five figures. when did stuff get so darn expensive?!

upstairs, we have our old bachelor/bachelorette furniture in the guest bedrooms. it will be a while before we replace that stuff!

bebetokids, copy all you want. imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! (as long as you don't live next door to me - lol!)

honey11, we pretty much picked everything out ourselves. the carpet woman suggested a few paint colors on the strips that I liked best and we tweaked them to come up with the combo we used.

LOL @ the weeds, KYgirl! I read somewhere, "If it's green from the street..." and I've taken that to heart! I don't care if it's weeds or grass, as long as it's green, it's better than this dirt/mud we have going! Especially out in the country I think we can get by with that ;-)

Beautiful home, Kygirl! So glad it's done and you lived through it! Would you share the name of the paint color in your living room?

superchick, sure! our family room paint is Beige Tellin from Porter Paints.

    Hi kygirl~

I know I've already replied on this post, but I just have to say again how much I love your new home. It is absolutely beautiful, and so well deserved after your "interesting" builder. :o) You've done such a great job making rooms flow and the colors are just beautiful. 2 thumbs up to you and your dh for such a lovely outcome! :o)

kygirl, congratulations on moving in! You have a beautiful home! I remember reading about some of your posts, in the last few months, and remember shuddering...now I'm tingling with excitement for your gorgeous house. Congrats again!

Your house is beautiful! Congratulations!! What kind of wood did you use in the kitchen and bathroom? I want to copy too!!

Pretty house. I especially like the front/rear porches. What a lovely place to have a summer cocktail!

Wow. Your use of architectural details made something in each room stand out. I love the entrance... Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed looking at your pictures.

    Congrats! Beautiful kitchen & bath!!

Ky Beautiful Beautiful home....you so deserve it after the roller coaster you have been on.

One question for you, is that refrigerator counter depth or are your cabinets built out?

    beautiful
    Much happiness
    cyn

aw, thanks everyone. It does feel good to finally be home.

Arkansagal, we bought a full-size fridge and recessed it into the wall. There is a six-inch bump out on the other side. we could do that because it's a walk-in pantry on the other side and no one even notices the bump out in there. we preferred the full-size fridge for two reasons - it holds more than the shallower counterdepth fridges and it was $600 cheaper than the counterdepth equivalent. We couldn't justify paying more for a smaller fridge!

dizzy - the hardwood floors are red oak with minwax provencial stain. the wood on the bathroom cabinets in the master bath is maple with a honey stain and ebony glaze.

thanks again, everyone. And now you all know where I sit to play on the computer - that's my office in the above pic. I love my view of a 100-plus acre meadow filled with cows, wild turkeys and geese.

oh, and almost forgot - the boys love their new house, too!

and here two of them are, relaxing on the new leather couches:

I haven't been on in quite a while and wondered if you were ever going to post pics. Glad to hear you are enjoying the house. We finally moved this week and I am too tired to enjoy it yet, although I am pinching myself each time I get into the huge shower!

Beautiful home! WOW what beautiful Goldens you have...how do the oak floors hold up with the 3 Goldens? Scratches...fur?? I ask as I have the same floors and 2 Goldens.NJ

It looks like all the headaches were worth it. Please tell me that all the headaches were worth it!

Your house is so lovely, congratulations!

Gorgeous! And what beautiful pups! I absolutely love your cabinetry choice. The colors in your kitchen look great. Congratulations!

nancy, our floors are already scratched a little. we had oak floors before and they looked fine but I guess with one golden it didn't make quite the impact as three goldens chasing each other! nevertheless, they still look good and we put a long runner in the area where the dogs were running and scratching the floor. so that's pretty much taken care of the dog issues. Although if I could redo it, I'd use Pergo or something more dog-friendly. How do your floors look?

kellyeng, the headaches were almost worth it. there is still a part of me that thinks we should have just bought ready-made. I still very much regret hiring the builder that we did. I can't change it, obviously, but I still wish I could. hopefully those feelings will fade more as time passes.

    mamabirrd, thanks!

Can you share the floor plan for this house? It is beautiful.

MY floors are ok- I dont mind the scratches after awhile they get a patina....

Hi Kygirl, I've only just seen your post (hoping to start moving in within the next couple of weeks!). I am so very, very happy for you that with all your ups, downs and crises, you've created such a beautiful "nest" for you and your family (including, of course, the 4-legged members).

I love the attention you've paid to details, and envy your kitchen. Everything just goes together so nicely.

I'm also glad to see I'm not the only one who furnishes around the seating needs of the canine family members. lol. That's why I chose laminate for the new place.

    Congratulations again!

nancyjean, your goldens are so beautiful! I love the x-mas bows. your floors look fabulous. and so handy that they're golden retriever colored! :)

Summer, thanks for the kind thoughts! and yes, we love to accommodate our beasties whenever possible.

mrminrm, I don't have a floorplan in photo form. sorry!

jo, bumping this up for you...

Well no wonder I missed it--we spend the month of August away in Ct. Wow! Your home looks so beautiful. You did a great job and I love the way our houses reflect each other in some ways, and differ in others.
Thanks for posting your finished pics.
    Again, great job.

    Jo

Jo, thanks for the compliments. I hope you had a wonderful month in CT. It is cool how our homes differ despite their obvious similarities. And can I say again how much I love your kitchen floor? It's so stunning.

I can't believe I missed this thread the first time around, we were on vacation for the initial post, but still! Everything is just beautiful, kygirl! I love the colors, your backsplash in the kitchen is beautiful, as are those gorgeous cabinets. Your master bath tile is great, and your fixtures look similar to mine (Eva by moen). You should be proud of yourself, you've created a beautiful home. It was hard-won,I remember that much! Enjoy.

Beautiful home kygirl! May I ask where your couch came from? It is very similiar to what I'm looking for.

playfish, we bought our couches from La-Z-Boy. I forget the color, it was one of the shades that come in the thicker leather dyed all the way through so that the scratches won't show as easily.

I forgot how beautiful your house is! I love the colors....and the puppies!

After all that sturm and drang comes a lovely home. Nice palette!

Very Nice House!!! Sorry to move an old post up, but I wanted to ask what color the stain on your cabinets are, if you remember. I also LOVE the beadboard on the sides. We are getting ready to build a house, and yours is probably the one that matches our tastes the most.

i'm glad this was moved up as i didn't get a chance to see it when you first posted. beautiful home, i hope you get many happy years of enjoyment from it. i'm also intrigued by your dining room light fixture... can't see it very well from that angle but where is it from? any more info? thanks!
