Setting Ceiling Tile

Good evening all,

I have 12 x 12 porcelain tile being used on the wall.

I plan to use it on the ceiling, but I'm wondering what the best material to use while setting it. I've been using thinset w/ the ad-mix for the walls. Is there a preffered way to mix it (thicker / thinner) or add a little more ad-mix to get it tackier? Is it out of the question to set a tile this large on a ceiling?

I already set some smaller tile "upside down" and they did not budge with the way I've been mixing the thinset.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

JT

Hey JT-- It's not often that I refer someone to another thread to answer their question, but I just went through this in another thread over the last week with someone. Check toward the end of the following thread:

    JT,
Look under Jack Hamiltons reply on this post, it's exactly how we did the ceiling.

    Tiling a ceiling is easy.

It's the grouting that gets messy!

    Thanks for the responses,

I finished the last course of tile up to the ceiling tonight along with some of the trim tile around the entrance into the shower. Taking tomorrow night off to take the missus' out for our anniversary, and then Wed. it will be time to tile the ceiling. Maybe a couple cans of confidence will be in order. ;-)

And Mongo, I was thinking the same thing about the grout about a half hour ago after cleaning up for the night.

BTW what is the policy for posting pics on the site?

Oh, if only I had discovered this forum 6 months ago, when we started our DIY bath remodel. When we tiled the shower ceiling, we made jigs to hold up the tiles for 30 minutes or so, then pulled them out, set a few more tiles, etc. If only I'd known about the suction....

I've only been here a week and I'm already getting addicted. Good thing we've still got the rest of the house to remodel.

    weedyacres,
Sometimes too much knowledge can drive you insane. Right now I'm close to that point. LOL Just look at my post to poor Bill V., I'm driving him crazy too.

Stuck some tile upside down tonight.

Saw the pictures on the posts, had a couple of cans of confidence and knew it could be done.
They all stuck on the ceiling like Spider Man.
Thanks again for all the input.

And one more thing if you will allow me. I know it is not part of this forum. But please allow me this one thought.
The documentary "The War" is on behind me and makes me think to encourage everyone to thank a Veteran this weekend.

    Thanks,

Amen, JT. Offering thanks to a vet is never that far off topic.

    Hey Mongo,

Had a great idea for setting the ceiling tile the other night and doing the grout. >>> I saw my hawk sitting there and put it to good use to get the thinset up on the ceiling using a taping knife, and then spreading it out with my grooved trowel. It worked out great, I was expecting to be coughing up mud for a day. Then for the grouting I used it for both the ceiling and for the walls. It seemed to work out better than scooping it out of the "pot" >>> very little mess.

Maybe it's not neccessary for Pro's like you and Bill >>> but for a novice like myself, it was just the ticket.

For the grout, actually the hawk's not a bad idea!!

Just an FYI-- being a pro doesn't suspend the laws of "fizziks", as my girlfriend in college used to call it!!
