changing styles between floors

I'm at a decision point. I originally wanted an interior with white trim and doors throughout the house. The builder talked me out of it. (it's so hard to keep clean, he said) We ended up with dark oak wood trim (stained) with prairie doors (three panel) and mission style kitchen. This is the main level. After getting the builder's quote, we decided to finish the lower level ourselves so now I have an opportunity to use white trim, which I love. I want to use color on the walls and I feel you're limited with color when you use stained wood trim. However, will it look odd to go from stained wood / prairie style upstairs to a white trim downstairs? The trim and doors will not be a prairie style, as that style *really* should be stained wood, IMO. It seems like a rather radical change, like walking into a totally different house. Is it best to keep one style throughout the house or can this be done? I should mention that I'm not unhappy with the prairie main level. I love prairie style but I also like white. I'm like that person who wants to order both the lasagna *and* the steak and shrimp ~ can't I have both?

Thanks,

janb
