light in shower

I'm putting in a 5X4 glass shower, well glass on 2 walls and some are recommending I put a light in the shower. There is plenty of window light in the room and there will be one ceiling light (probably 3 x 60w bulbs). I think it would be enough light but maybe others will advise differently?

I really think that you will throughly enjoy that lighting after it is in. Lighting is so dramatic and it will really showcase your new BR and all your hard work. I enjoyed looking at mine when I had 2x4 wall studs and pink insulation staring back at me and I am enjoying it now with durock run through the room. I am giddy with excitement on how happy I will be when I actually have finished walls and my glass installed for the shower. My shower is a odd shape and I put in (2) 3" 50 watt Halogen lights. It would have been nice to have one further back in the corner but there was no way to do it too many things in the way. My suggestion would be to install two on a separate switch so they don't have to be used always.

I have a can light in the ceiling over the shower. I don't always turn it on, but I do use it at night when I want to see well, like when I am shaving my legs or cleaning the shower. I would recommend that you put it in. Remember that your window light is useless at night.

    Agreeing with everyone else...

It's tempting to save money on lighting when the fixtures you plan aren't especially decorative. But after living with both really good and really bad lighting, I can tell you that's a Big Mistake. Bad lighting can simply ruin an otherwise great space.

Put it on another switch if you're not sure you'll need it.

Yes, yes, yes, put a light in the shower.

We opted not to put one in when we expanded our guest bathroom (previously a 1/2 bath) and added a shower stall. We didn't want to hire an electrician, which we'd have needed to do since we pulled permits (the other lighting in the bathroom remained the same--hi-hats). The lighting in that bathroom is more than adequate to light the shower itself. It might have been nice, but totally fine without it as well.

If it's a guest bath then you can do without, but if it's your bathroom, I would definately do it!!! When we renovated our old master we didn't put it in, and I regretted it.

I would put in two 4" or 3" recessed lights.

We put one 6" recessed light (wet-location listed) in our 3 x 5 shower. The shower also has two windows of its own, but I know from previous homes that having a light in the shower -versus relying on the ambient room light- makes a really big difference in enjoying the space. I would DEFINITELY do it if I were you. You can always opt not to turn that light on but it would be a real pain to retrofit later.

I would never have thought it was a big deal until I had a light in the shower... and now I think it's a "must." It was just a single recessed can in a 3'x4' shower. I didn't always turn it on, but it sure perked up my morning shower at 4:30am when the world is dark outside.

I would say definately. I'm a light enthusiast! I need light everywhere. I have 2 4" recessed lights in my tub/shower combo. they are on a dimmer (believe it or not) for my wife who was taking very early showers and didn't want the brightness.

Also pay attention to placement. I purposely made sure one of the lights was in front of me when taking a shower.

Get the light, you won't regret it!!!

Never turn mine on. Then again I'm not a fan of bright lights and I don't find it relaxing to have a bright light shining on me (especially while I'm naked in the shower!)
