Updating Master Bath

Looking for suggestions on updating my master bath. Here are two pictures of the current bathroom. The pictures are old, but nothing has changed.

{{gwi:1508807}}{{gwi:1508808}}

Looking to change out the faucets, vanity top and lights. Thinking about painting the walls a gray. The tiles on the wall and floors are a white with gray marble pattern. My questions are what should I change the vanity top to granite or marble? What color? Same thing with the faucets? I don't think that rub oil bronze would look good with the tile. The faucets are currently Price Pfister and will stick with that brand so I don't have to change the rough in valves. Looking at the Catalina or Portland style.

Any recommendations or comments would be appreciated.

    here are my ideas:
I would not worry about the roughin valves, faucets are very easy to change out these days withthe quick connect system.

The vanity does not match very well with your oak trim, I would paint the window trim white, change the hardware to brushed nickel and head over to your local granite fabricator and choose a quartz remnant (does not need to be sealed) to match up with your existing tile. I can't tell what kind of sinks you have, but if you are getting a new top fabricated, getting new sinks is not that much more and the Kohler Ladena is a really nice sink.

I can't tell what the color of the contrasting border tile is, but I think grey might be a little bit cold. Maybe you can find a shade that complements well with the cherry vanity and the border tile...maybe a green/grey/blue spa color?

Skatermom...Thanks for your suggestions. The quick connect systems are usually for the lavatory faucets. The rough in valves that I don't want change are the shower and tub ones. The two faucets from PF that I'm considering are the following: http://www.pfisterfaucets.com/trade/bath/Product/RT6-E0XC.aspx and http://www.pfisterfaucets.com/trade/bath/Product/RT6-E0XC.aspx

    My thoughts:
Changing the faucet trim will definitely update the bathroom. (Although some really avant-garde designers are daring to put gold/brass in again: it's so out it's cool in some eyes...) Personally I would stick with polished chrome, which is the most classic, enduring finish for faucets, I think.

I agree with skatermom that the oak trim isn't doing the room any justice. Can you paint it all white? That will definitely go better with your vanity and look more modern and classic at the same time.

Can you post better photos of the tile, both floor and wall? It's really hard to tell what's going on there. On the vanity top, marble vs. granite.... some thoughts:
    1) Marble is a lot more high-maintenance (it will show etches) but is gorgeous. I have it but I'm OK with the etching. Granite is more bulletproof.
    2) The main concern is how it looks with your floor and wall tile. Sometimes it looks really bad to put REAL stone with ceramic tile that mimics it. So if your floor tiles are faux carerra marble, for instance, you might not want a carerra top. I have ceramic tiles in the bath I'm doing now, but they are faux limestone, so the grey marble top looks fine with them... because they're not trying to be the SAME, you know? But anyway, we can't really advise on which type of stone top without seeing the existing tiles...

How about replacing the towel bars and TP holder with nice new ones in the same finish as your new faucets? That can add some nice bling, like jewelry, to the bathroom.

If you can post some larger photos and ones that show the tile I'd be happy to offer some other ideas:)

The tile looks a little beige in the photo, if it is really more white you might consider a pale, pale gray-blue on the walls and as the other posters have mentioned, paint all the wood trim white. That little trim strip in the tile looks nice, you could play that up with matching towels in that color maybe. Do you really need the phone installed in there, or could you just take a cordless model in the room with you?

Thanks so far for the advise. I'll try to post close up pictures of the tile this weekend. I'll probably end up replacing the oak trim with new painted trim. I personally don't like the look of painted oak trim. To much raised grain in it.

The telephone is no longer in the bathroom.

The bathroom(didn't exist before)was done back in 1992/1993 when I did a gut/addition/remodel of the house I grew up in. The vanity is cherry and has darkened over the years.

Thanks again for the advise and keep it coming. I appreciate all of it.

If the vanity is well constructed, a dark cherry is very popular. Don't forget to change out the handles.

I have to disagree about the polished chrome, as my own preference is for brushed or stainless. But I shudder at the thought of gold coming back, it was always gaudy even when it was in fashion [grin].

You might want to change out the mirrored cab for two oval mirrored cabs instead. Since you plan to repaint anyway, that would give another updated touch.
