Even those can't be installed flush. That's a fire hazard/cabinet damage issue. If you want the sleekest look possible, you do a cooktop on top of a wall oven.

I know they aren't installed completely flush, but they get pretty close (within an inch).

As for a wall oven below a cooktop, I don't know if that is a possibility for me as I need to stay with a gas (I can't upgrade my electric service due to building requiurements). The only gas wall range that I can find that will fit below a cooktop is the Verona VEBIG30. I haven't heard good things about Verona.

Any range sold for home use is safe to install in direct contact with cabinets. This includes the Pro Style lines. I have a GE Monogram, and it's not nearly hot enough to set the cabinets alight.
Now real pro restaurant style ranges, like by Garland, Vulcan, others, can't be installed within 18" of base cabs. And (if you get them new) they come wilh all manner of warnings attached on tags, labels, and in the manuals. And the building inspector may even catch you up on it!
A friend of mine installed a vulcan (with salamander!) in her old house kitchen. Without even a vent hood. The cabinets even at 18" away still got very hot; she ran it continuously when she was doing a catering job, which was her income.
I still think with the salamander, she needed a vent hood (not to mention Halon), but, there you are, she had neither. Luckily the kitchen had cross-ventilation; she would put a box fan in a window to blow out some of the smoke and heat, winter or summer.

Yeah, just wait until that fresh white paint turns brown from the heat. Fire safety encompasses more than "it won't start a fire". Scorching paint is only cosmetic damage after all, and no warranty from anyone will cover it.

just to clarify, i was not suggesting you do anything that's hazardous or not inline with the product was designed. in our case, the oven was designed to have wood around it, it's just that all the pictures we saw had it surrounded by modern overlay doors. my suggestion was simply to talk to a cabinetmaker about it, as they can be quite creative.

Bmorepanic has a thread asking about an "Ancona" counterdepth range that has just turned up on the Costco.com wenstie. Not a brand I've ever heard of but the range looks like it might have been made by Fratelli Onofri (which I think has a factory in Ancona, Italiy).

jm_seattle: looks great! what cabinetmaker did you go with in Seattle??

The cabinets are Ikea with walnut doors from semi-handmade. I just looked up the Ancona range on costco.com and it won't work for me, it's dual fuel, i need all gas, & it's 36", I need 30". It looks like the ILVE range may work for me also. Is there anywhere that I can find the depth of ranges from the back to the face of the door? AJ Madison is inconsistent with what their depth is measuring (on some ranges it's to the door, some to the handle, some to the front overhang).

Try Jade ranges. I think they have 24" deep cabs.

I take that back. the Jade cabinet depth is 25".

The ILVE Nostalgie GAS range is 23 5/8" deep.
The ILVE Majestic Range- now available in all gas in 30" & 36" sizes - comes in a bit deeper at 27 3/4"
