Being around as a laborer and as a young'n are great but you will still need to know the building process in and outs everything from permiting, codes, legalities, etc. I've been involved with various trades working for builders as hired help, sub contracting, and currently have a general carpentry & repair business. I've been doing this residentially for over 18 years and can tell you it was fine on the physical aspects on our build, but i ran into quite a few surprises on the initial start of our project involving engineering, plans, permitting, etc.Do your homework in these areas before getting started.

My only vice with kit homes is that you are at the mercy of the materials they send your way. This is fine if the outfit is local or even within a reasonable distance, but i would be leary of long distance deliveries.Down the road some folks had a kit delivered from a cedar home outfit. There was everything from the lumber package, cedar siding, windows, doors, insulation, roofing, tub/shower units, even the sheet rock was all delivered onsite and sat for quite some time. Luckily we are in a low/no crime area, but even at that, there is the weather to contend with. If you go the kit route, i would ask for deliveries as you need them if possible.
