Looking for a range hood

I'm looking for a range hood that will go above my soon-to-be-ordered Diva Induction range.

This one by Modern-Aire looks like it would be perfect, except that in order to vent out the top, the Modern Aire folk claim that they need to have a flat top, which would totally ruin the whole "barrel" look:

(I know others rave about Modern-Aire, but I haven't been impressed with the people on the phone. The hood in the picture is a custom variation of their PS26 -- they don't have *any* pictures of a regular PS26 to send to interested customers. So, they're advertising (in their catalog & website) a custom hood but don't have any pictures of the regular version of the hood).

Anybody seen anything similar by another manufacturer?

Check out Tradewind hoods/liners. I don't know if they have that style but they have a fantastic product ( I have one) and they are very very helpful. c

Just finished a kitchen remodel and based on research here, I ended up with a Kobe hood which is one of the best buys of my entire remodel. The link below carries the line and had the most useful info:

I bought model RA9436SQB and it looks as nice as the Vent-A-Hood I was considering and cost $1k less. If budget isn't as crucial for you, another post here included a stunning custom hood from Rangecraft. I also checked out Abbaka custom hoods.
p.s. jealous of your induction as it was my first choice but ended up with gas.

Thanks for the hints. Rangecraft has one that looks like a possibility -- I'll have to check on the price on that.

I hadn't looked at Abbaka before, so that's a good pointer. I've looked at Kobe, but didn't see any that really jumped out at me.

Well, I'm one of the main MA boosters here so I should try to sway your opinion:

First, I noted your complaint about the PS26. All their PS26's are really by definition custom as you are the one who chooses the finish. The hood in the picture you link to is standard in configuration, but the choice of color and trim is custom. Therefore, there really is no "standard" PS26 to see.

I'm also curious how strongly you want a chimney type hood. If you're locked into that configuration, then sticking a vertical chimney on top of that pretty barrel hood would be a strange look IMHO. Is it the barrel look you're most interested in, or are you looking for a chimney hood? If the latter, then a more conventional model like the PS2030 might work.

As to MA personnel, I can only speak to the ones I've dealt with, who were uniformly gracious, helpful, and knowledgeable. Jeff Herman, in particular, was an incredible resource. You can search his name on this forum and find testimony from plumorchard and marthavila as to Jeff's helpfulness.

Also, here's a link to a thread with a photo of klb's beautiful PS26 barrel hood in RAL white to match the Lacanche. Again, you'll see the dimensions are quite different than the photo you linked to, as is the finish, which all comes from the custom nature of their hoods.

And here's RedRange's gorgeous MA hood over BS range with RAL colors matched:

Not what you were looking for but it's such a great setup I had to link to it.

Anyway, hope you find what you want. Lots of other good brands out there too.

    Nightflyer,

Believe it or not, my MA PS26 -- custom designed and manufactured to vent out the top -- arrived today! It's been powder coated claret red to match my claret red Aga 6-4 range. And, with it's stainless steel straps and potrail, I assure you, it's a looker that has me totally beyond myself with excitement!

Like you, I thought the PS26 to be perfect "as is" and was concerned that any alteration for purposes of top venting would ruin the design. However, my ID and Jeff Herman of MA (with input from my GC) designed a small plaster soffit to sit just above the barrel of the hood and hide the ductwork. As such, the barrel look remains very much intact and the soffit adds a chimney-like effect that is proportional to the unit. Plus, because my cabs don't extend all the way to the ceiling, but the soffit does, the soffit lends an overall staggered effect to the cabinet run which I rather like. At this point, the GC is saying that the hood will be installed tomorrow. If so, I can try and upload some photos for you by the weekend.

BTW, I'm surprised and sorry to hear that your experience with the MA people hasn't been so great. In my experience, I've found each and every one of those people to be courteous and helpful. However, Clingresga is right -- there's no getting around the fact that if you have even a half serious thought about going the MA route (which I think you should) then, by all means, make sure you have at least one conversation with Jeff Herman before you make a final decision. After countless kitchen reno choices and purchases, and especially among the appliance decisions, I must say that my experience with Jeff and Modern-Aire goes to the top of my "good job!" list.

clinresga: The link below shows a Rangecraft version that has basically the format I want -- barrel shaped, but with a top vent. The hood will be between a window & a pass-thru, and doing anything like a soffit or cabinet above will make that space too crowded.

The thing I like about the barrel design is that it gives kind of an 'older' look without being heavily ornate. It also shows some style, without overwhelming the small space that I have.

For what it's worth, here's a picture of where the range hood will go. Given the economy, my "big kitchen remodel" has become "replace a few appliances", so I'm trying to be smart about what I replace, and getting good quality stuff that will still be good when I finally get around to doing the bigger remodel.

The range will be replaced by a 36" Diva range (I hope, if the electrical work gets too expensive, then it may be a 36" gas range). The cabinet and POS unvented range hood go away and get replaced by a real range hood that vents out the roof.

There's 48" between the framing of the pass-thru and the window, so I was thinking of a 42" hood -- something to nicely fill the space and give the extra 6" that people recommend for determining the size of a hood.

The hood will be visible from the dining area (via the pass-thru), so the side of the hood has to be a reasonable thing to look at as well.

Marthavila: I'm glad that the soffit idea worked for you, but I really don't see that working out well in my situation.

nightflyer: I can see from your picture what you're trying to do. Personally, I'd wait to see if marthavila posts her pix, as it sounds fabulous. I suspect I'd prefer her solution to the problem of top venting a barrel hood, as the Rangecraft chimney just disturbs my sense of proportion, but it's certainly a nice hood and I can understand you going with it.

I will again echo marthavila's comments though. My interactions with Jeff and MA were truly some of my favorite parts of this huge renovation we did, and my MA hood is neck and neck with my Lacanche range as my favorite part of the kitchen. I'd certainly echo her comment to speak at least once with Jeff before making a final decision.

I'm also hoping to see marthavila's pictures, I'm just not sure that her solution will work for me (but I might change my mind after looking at the pictures).

Here's a quick & dirty photoshop composite of how the range hood might look in my space. I actually like the visual vertical line that the vent makes as an architectural statement between the two windows.

    Nightflyer,

Go on the Kitchen Forum and check out Farmhousebound's hood. It's a top vented MA PS26. She's done pretty much what I've done, except that her soffit is wood and isn't quite as tall as mine. Although my own top vented PS 26 was installed on Friday, there's way too much other construction going on, so it's still under plastic for protection. Probably won't have pics until after Thanksgiving. But, Farmhousebound's photo is a darn good example of the concept.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the link. While it looks nice, it's just not what I'm looking for. I'm hoping that the Abbaka barrel range hood will work & come out at a reasonable price.

    Gorgeous hood, nightlyer! Good luck!

Thanks! I'm still looking forward to seeing pics of your hood when you finally get time to post them. The way things are going, I'm sure that I won't have made any final decision by then!
